How Do I Choose the Best Mixing Bowl Set?

(Updated )
We have yet to see a kitchen that doesn’t have an assortment of pots and pans. When you’re in the kitchen a lot, you need more utensils and equipment, and everyone knows that you can’t do much in a kitchen without a glorious set of mixing bowls! Whether you’re whipping up a great batch of cookies or tossing some healthy salads for dinner, mixing bowls are indispensable. Today, these bowls have gotten fancy with pour spouts, lids, rubber bottoms---all the bells and whistles! Most bowls even stack together so you don’t have to worry about having a ton of storage space. If you want to pour out blended ingredients and divide it amongst several bowls, a stacked set lets you grab every bowl with just one hand.

When you’re in the market for your mixing bowl set, consider each bowl’s depth and height as well as the material they’re constructed from. And if you think you have to buy stainless steel, think again! Although it tends to look a little more modern, many people have had great results using higher-end plastic bowls. It may not be as nice as your fancy dinnerware, but what matters in food prep is how well your product helps you cook or bake.
Price
With so many sets offered online and offline, and all of them priced so differently, we can safely say that the price you pay will have to do with the product’s features. Stainless steel tends to cost more than plastic, but heavy-duty plastic tends to be more durable and versatile (steel can get really hot when using hot liquids!). Of course, we all love how shiny and beautiful stainless steel looks.

While you may expect to pay more for better quality, this isn’t always the case. For as low as $24, you can purchase a set of bowls that’ll last you for years, and if you go higher—around $44 or so—you’ll find sets that have more features and may last a little longer. We can tell you that, in our research, we found some cheaper bowls that weren’t at all durable. We really enjoy helping customers make their shopping decisions, but we hate for people to have to buy the same items twice! All of our products and brands are chosen with you—and your budget—in mind.
Features
Remember when we mentioned “features” earlier? In an effort to help you pick out the best mixing bowl set for your needs, we’ve compiled a list of all the great features these sets typically have. While every bowl won’t contain all these features, we recommend you pick out the ones you favor the most and begin browsing items with your list in mind!
  • Made with BPA free plastic
  • Made with stainless steel
  • Bowls with lids; great for storing excess food/mixes
  • Measurements marked on bowls’ interior
  • Large bowls with attachable graters
  • Lightweight
  • Flat bottom with curved lip
  • Non-slip rubber bottom
  • Soft-grip handles
  • Pour spouts for easy mixing/blending
  • Stackable sets
  • Sets in different colors
  • Dishwasher safe
Construction and Design
Mixing bowls can either be made of plastic, glass, stainless steel or ceramic. Glass is the most versatile because it can be used in the oven, microwave, dishwasher and freezer, but it has to be handled with care.

Plastic bowls are less versatile, but they don’t rust, usually have pouring spouts, and most of them can be used in the microwave (a good tip—if you can bend the plastic pretty easily in your mind, don’t put it in the microwave! It’ll probably warp). With plastic, you don’t have to be as careful, which is great if you have kids that like to help in the kitchen. However, this material isn’t suitable for melting chocolate, or for use as a double boiler, because they don’t conduct heat evenly, and chocolate/fat will cling to the sides of the bowl.

Metal bowls are super easy to clean, don’t get stained, and can be heated or cooled. Stainless steel is usually rust-proof, so you always want to ensure your bowls are stainless. In general, you can place a metal bowl in the dishwasher, wash it with very hot water, and use it as a double boiler. Just remember that metal gets hot very quick, so be sure to use oven mitts if you’re pouring hot liquid into it!

Ceramic bowls are probably the nicest looking, but are just as subject to easy breakage. They’re more heavy-duty than glass, they’re rust-proof, microwaveable, and super easy to clean. If you need to proof yeast for bread, ceramic is your best option as metal or plastic can create a bad taste.

For mixing large quantities or very liquid batter, a deep mixing bowl is ideal. Shallow, flat-bottomed bowls are best for dry ingredients, tossing salads or serving snacks (like popcorn) to friends. If you plan to do a lot of mixing in your bowls, look for ones that have measurements marked on the sides so you won’t need to use measuring cups. Bowls with spouts make clean-up even easier because you can literally throw all your ingredients in a few bowls and get cooking!
Performance and Ease of Use
Bowls with non-slip bottoms are great because they keep the bowl from sliding all over the countertop while you’re mixing, stirring, beating, or blending. Silicone or rubber bottoms, especially on granite countertops, prevent accidental spills.

Almost all bowls are dishwasher safe, but be careful about lids or any extras—like measuring spoons—that may come with your set. Not all pieces included in the set are safe, but this will be marked on the product page or package. If you’re the type of person who likes to make salsas, dressings, and sauces, consider bowls with lids for easy storage and no clean-up!

What is the Best Mixing Bowl Set?

Every mixing bowl has its merits! While we would love to tell you that one product is the best, we simply can’t because everyone is unique and has different tastes. If you want to know what the “best” is, think of what features you’d like your mixing bowl set to have. Do you want soft-grip handles? An oversized, non-circular design? Something that comes with lids, or maybe bowls that are dishwasher safe? Once you know what you’re looking for, you’ll know what the best product is when you see it! Ready to get to our review? Okay—let’s go!
