How Do I Choose the Best Printer?

Choosing the right printer for you can be a daunting task. There are so many different types to consider; inkjet, laser, all-in-one and different features you might want it to have; printing, scanning, copying or faxing. For this review we’ve decided to look at a mix of all of these to give you a broad overview of what’s out there on the market. If you know you are looking for an All-in-One that can perform all your daily functions, then you might want to take a look at our focused review for All-in-One Inkjet Printers & Fax.

One of the problems with an All-in-One however, is that they might not perform each function to a high standard. If you tend to use faxing a lot, you might be better off looking for a fax machine separate from your actual printer.

Printers like computers, cell phones and other electronics, have changed a lot over the years. For one, you get more for less which is what everyone likes to hear. Nowadays you can print directly from your camera or memory card. You can even print directly from your smartphone or tablet. You’re no longer bound to your desk and honestly, that’s a good thing.

With all of these new developments, sometimes it can be a daunting task to decide which printer to get. Not only do you have to consider your needs but also cost. Not just the upfront cost of the printer itself but the running costs also. Some printers are generally more low cost than others. That’s just how it is.

But the good thing here is you have options, a lot of options yes, but options nonetheless.

So how do you choose a printer? Well as we said before, you need to know what you want and also factor in how much you’re willing to spend. Take a look at what we call our consideration factors to see what it is you need to think about before making your purchase.
Price
One of the first things people look at when purchasing something is the price. And that’s understandable especially if you’re running a business, you need to see the return on your investment (ROI) with any purchase you make. Yes, you’d like to get that levitating office chair but is it going to make you more productive, probably not, but it’ll look cool.

Sadly looking cool isn’t always a great reason to buy something. But sometimes you can get product that not only looks cool and but also helps you to be more productive. A printer for example.

Now, what exactly affects the price of a printer? Well as we said before, with technological advancements, you get a lot more for your money which is great. But there are certain things which affect the overall price of the printer.
  • Printer category – you need to decide if you want a laser or inkjet printer
  • Type – do you want a standalone printer or a multifunctional (MFP) one?
  • Speed – when you’re printing, you don’t want to wait 10 minutes for a page, do you? That’s why speed is an important factor as well.
  • Resolution – quality is everything
  • Connection – some printers can use Wi-Fi and other forms of connection, others can’t. This also affects the cost of your printer.
Now, we know that there are some cheap printers out there. We’ve seen them, the problem is that cheap printers aren’t exactly good printers and they tend to cause a host of problems down the road, making you toss them out and go looking for a new printer which ends up costing you more money in the long run.

We know you don’t like that. No one likes that.

That’s why we’ve put together a list of 5 great printers from 5 different brands that’ll make you glad you made the investment. They aren’t super expensive and you’ll get great value for your money. They range from a retail price of a about $185 to $399. Luckily, you can get them for better prices on Amazon and they come with free shipping.
Features
The features of a printer affect its price. These features can be vastly different and sometimes really similar. We’ve mentioned some them before, but they are all important.

  • Printing category
  • Warranty

Construction and Design
A lot of people don’t really look at how a printer is built but it is important to consider how a printer is designed before you purchase it. But there are a number of things to think about when looking at the construction of a printer such as -
  • Loading tray – is it large enough for your documents? Are you okay with just letter and legal size or do need something that can print larger documents?
  • Feeder – do you have to manually load the papers each time or does it take care of that automatically?
  • Size – do you need something small, that takes up a little space without compromising performance? Or do you need something big?
  • Duplex or simplex printer – can it only print on one side or the paper or both sides?
  • Type – is just a printer or is it a muliti-functional printer?
These are important things to think about when buying your next printer.
Performance and Ease of Use
While cost is indeed the first thing that comes to people’s minds when making a purchase of any kind, unless you’re one of those people who can easily say “money is no object.” (Haven’t you wanted to say that without any hesitation before?)

The dream, right?

Anyways back to the matter at hand, as we were saying, while many people consider cost, it’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that the performance and the use of a printer is important.

What’s the point of buying a cheap printer if it produces poor quality documents or photos at a frustratingly slow speed? Speed, quality of graphics and also how easy it is to use are some of the important things to consider when thinking about the performance and ease of use of a printer.

What is the Best Printer?

When considering a new printer, there are a number of things to think about before making your choice. Type, category, speed, resolution and connectivity are some of the main points to consider before deciding which one is right for you. Let’s take a look at the 5 brands we’ve selected and see how they compare.

Brother Wireless Color All-in-One Inkjet Printer - Print, Scan, Copy, Fax, Up to 250 Sheets

Brother Wireless Printer MFCJ5620DW

Features
The Brother MFCJ5620DW is a great high output printer. With the ability to handle large workloads and still produce high quality images at impressive speed, it’s no wonder this printer has attracted such great reviews and remarks from consumers all over. With a current retail price of $199.99, the brother is a great deal for anyone who buys it.

This Brother Color Printer is a prime example of a printer that won’t break the bank, but still has all the essential features-
  • High speed printing
  • 2-year limited warranty
  • TouchScreen Display
  • Low cost printing
  • Spacious multi-purpose tray
This all in one printer lets you print, copy, scan and fax all from the same machine, with print size up to 11” x 17”.
Construction and Design
A heavy duty 4-in-1 printer, the Brother MFCJ5620DW is beast of a printer. It’s quite large, weighing 25 pounds and measuring 19.3 x 13.6 x 9.4 inches. This is why it’s able to print on tabloid sheets which a key feature of the MFCJ5620DW.

While it is quite large, the MFCJ5620DW Color Printer saves space by employing sideways printing which is something not very common among many printers. It carries a multifunction tray which can hold a maximum of 80 sheets of paper and there is also a 35-sheet ADF that can be folded down into the printer to save space when you aren’t using it. The main tray can hold up to 250 sheets which is a nice capacity and not too much for the MFCJ5620DW.

There is a 3.7-inch touch screen on the front with soft touch buttons and the user interface is quite simple and easy to use. One of the drawbacks of this Brother Wireless Printer is the placement of the USB jack because instead of being on the outside, it’s inside under the scanner plate which not only makes it difficult to use but also reduces the length of your USB cord.
Performance and Ease of Use
You can print from the Brother MFCJ5620DW either directly from Wi-Fi or your smartphone or tablet. You can also print directly from memory cards and flash drives as well. Setup and installation is fairly simple. The wiring however is a bit more complex than we’d like but not overly so.

The ability to print tabloid sized documents is a nice touch for this all in one printer. On top of that, it boasts a print speed of 35ppm for black and 27ppm for colored which is pretty good. The main drawback of the MFCJ5620DW is the less than stellar graphics however it makes up for that with its ability to handle large jobs in other areas.

If you need to print big and a lot then the Brother MFCJ5620DW is the printer for you.
