Whatever your hair type, whether it’s thick, thin, straight or curly, you will most likely want to style your hair differently at some point in your life. I don’t know about you, but I have straight hair and have always wanted luscious, beautiful curls (preferably just waking up like it naturally would be great too!) but hey, the grass is always greener and all that. With the invention of curling irons, however, that dream can be a reality!
It’s not always smooth sailing when you’re thinking about styling your hair with heat as this can cause some quite severe damage if you’re not careful. That’s why I’ve decided to go ahead and let you in on a few secrets about how to get the perfect curls without damaging your hair.
Top Tip #1 – Protect Your Hair
Use a heat protection spray! When you’re styling your hair with any hot tool, be it a curling iron, flat iron or even a hair crimper, you should always use heat protection. The temperature of a curling iron can range anywhere from 175 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re using oven gloves to protect your hands at that temperature, you should be doing the same with your hair. (And no, that doesn’t mean putting oven gloves on your head…)
Top Tip #2 – Avoid Excessive Heat
Don’t crank up the heat! Although your hair is now protected and you might think this’ll be the best way to get your curls to stick, it most definitely is not. You should try and get a curling iron with an adjustable temperature so you can use the right setting for you. If you’ve got quite thin hair for example, you’ll want to set the iron at the lowest possible temp, usually around 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Even if you have thick hair, however, do not use the highest possible temperature!. Go for a mid-temp, around 250-300 degrees and your hair will still curl but it’ll give you a softer, more professional look.
Top Tip #3 – Mix Up the Direction of Your Curls
Finally, if you want that natural, celebrity look, do not curl every piece of hair in the same direction! Mix it up and do a few curls the opposite way; this will ensure all the curls don’t just merge into one, mega curl and it’ll look much more natural. When you’ve finished curling your hair, apply some hairspray and run your fingers through the curls to loosen them.
If you have short hair and feel like this look couldn’t work for you, think again! In this day and age you can get hair extensions that are made with real human hair. Yes, it sounds a bit weird at first but it’s actually fantastic because you can treat them just like you would your own hair. Wash them, dry them and yes, you got it, curl them!
So, there you have it; my three top tips on how to get beautifully curled hair without the damage. Have fun with it and don’t be afraid to try new looks.
