HP Officejet Pro Wireless Fax Machine, Color Photo Printer, Scanner & Copier

Update: July 17, 2016 – Since the time of this review, HP has released a new model, the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 Wireless All-in-One Printer with Mobile Printing (M9L66A). Stay tuned for updated information, but until then, let’s take a look at its predecessor because we know the new model will even better! The HP Officejet Pro 8610 packs multiple features and it is an indispensable piece of equipment in any office! When it comes to choosing the perfect All-in-One office equipment, you are probably looking for a machine that can at least print, copy, scan and fax, eliminating the need to clutter the office with 4 separate machines. We have focused mainly on the HP’s printing capabilities, therefore we will now let you know about its great scan, copy and fax abilities too. Here are some excellent features this printer packs under its belt:

  • Scanner: Scan resolution up to 1200 dpi; Print speed in color up to 14.5ppm; Flatbed scan size 8.5” x 11”; ADF maximum size 8.5” x 14”; ADF 35 pages; Digital features enabling scan to email or fax to email.
  • Copier: Copy resolution with black text up to 1200 x 600 dpi; Copy resolution with color documents and graphics up to 1200 x 600 dpi; Black and color copy speed draft up to 31ppm; Up to 99 copies at a time; 25 – 400% reduce/enlarge capabilities.
  • Fax: Color faxing; 4 seconds per page; Up to 100 pages of fax memory; Up to 99 numbers for speed dial.

As you can see, HP doesn’t overlook any of these features, with each of them offering great specs. You might be worried that all of these functions would consume a lot of energy, however, HP ensures that this machine is ENERGY STAR qualified. Another added feature which makes this printer stand out from the rest is its duplex printing and wireless capabilities. With HP ePrint, Android OS Enablement Printing and Apple AirPrint, you can print documents from anywhere through your mobile phone, even when not connected to a network. Similarly, the 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n wireless connectivity allows for simple, easy access for an office setting. If you are looking for a All-in-One printer for your small office or work group, but the OJ 8610 doesn’t offer all you need, you might want to consider purchasing the latest HP Officejet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer, released in 2016, with even more great features.

Construction and Design
When it comes to choosing your perfect All-in-one printer/fax machine, sometimes the first factor we must consider is price. HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer & Fax offers all the capabilities of a multifunctional machine; print, copy, scan and fax, but thanks to HP for discontinuing this model, you can now get it for under $200. However, we know that it is not just initial cost you need to think about. Printers can be expensive to run, especially if you are looking to print pictures or color documents, you can expect your running costs to be higher. Replacing ink cartridges can be an expensive time, therefore HP has offered a more cost efficient solution with their XL ink cartridges. The HP 950 Black Officejet Ink Cartridge produces a yield of 1000 pages; however, the XL variant will yield 2300 pages. Similarly the color counterpart yield transforms from 700 to 1500 pages, meaning you will save money and you won’t have to change your cartridge as often. Similarly, HP offers a cartridge bundle pack which includes all black and color ink replacements but for a better price. The final feature HP has integrated to help their customers save money is HP Instant Ink. This is a system where your printer, if you opt into it, will automatically order new ink to your door before the old one runs out. Personally, we love this added capability that can make your life that much easier. Okay, so we have established that you can get the HP OJ Pro 8610 for a great price. Now let’s look at what you get for your money. We love the design of the 8610. It’s quite large, measuring 19.7 x 18.5 x 11.8 inches, however it has a minimalistic, smart design. For ease of use, the OJ 8610 has a 2.65 inch color touch screen, which controls all the printing, scanning, copying and faxing functions. Also, a small, but handy feature, HP have placed a USB port at the front of the printer for easy access when printing from a USB. Now you have decided you want an inkjet printer, you may be expecting to be using your All-in-One Officejet to print color documents, photos, brochures, leaflets or other media that will utilize the inkjets capabilities. Well, you will not be disappointed. With the HP OJ Pro 8610, you can expect photo resolution to be up to 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi if you use HP Advanced Photo Paper. For any of your other printing needs, HP offers a variety of paper types which make the most of certain aspects of this machine. These include: Plain paper, thick plain paper, HP Everyday Photo Paper Glossy, HP Brochure Paper 180g and HP Premium Plus Photo Papers, and the list goes on. Between the specialist paper, vivid color printing and a duty cycle of 30,000 pages, the HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer & Fax is an ideal addition to any home or business office.
Performance and Ease of Use
You can expect great performance from your highly-advanced HP Officejet Pro 8610 multifunction printer and, from what we’ve seen, it doesn’t disappoint. We’ve narrowed down the 5 most important specifications when determining which All-in-One printer to buy.
  • Speed- HP boasts print speed of up to 19ppm (black) and 14.5ppm (color) with a maximum draft speed of up to 31 ppm for black and color so you can feel confident you won’t be waiting around for your documents to print. If you are looking for a higher quality, faster printer you may want to take a look at the newest model from HP, the HP Officejet Pro 8620, which is capable of printing up to 21ppm (black) and 16.5ppm (color). This newer model offers a slightly higher print speed, however, it comes with a slightly higher price, at a bit over $160 on Amazon when we last checked. This is where you need to prioritize what is more important for you when choosing your new printer, cost or speed efficiency?
  • Print Quality- We have already taken a look at the print quality for color documents, but what can you expect from your everyday printing? For mono printing, you can expect a resolution of up to 1200 x 1200 dpi on regular plain paper. There have been a lot of praises about the HP’s print quality in this aspect, although some have suggested the black ink isn’t as vibrant and bold as other inks they’ve used. When it comes to the HP Officejet 8610, you are looking for more than just printing capabilities. The scanning function offers up to 1200 dpi and faxing resolution 200 x 200 dpi.
  • Paper Tray Capacity- The OJ 8610 incorporates the standard 250 page paper tray, however, there is space to include another tray, totaling the capacity to 500 pages. This is great news if you are expecting to have high print demands, perhaps in an office setting with multiple users. Another advantage to choosing HP’s 8610 is the 35 sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) which can increase speed efficiency when faxing or copying. Again, if this is an important factor to you, you may want to look at the HP OJ 8620 model that increased their ADF to 50 pages.
  • Page Yield- Page Yield is one of the most important factors to consider when looking at the cost to run your multifunctional machine. As stated before the quoted page yield for black printing is 1000 pages, and 700 pages for color.
  • Memory- HP OJ 8610 has a 128 MB memory. When it comes to faxing, you can store up to 100 pages. This is great if faxing is an important function for you as some multi functional machines tend to overlook faxing capabilities.
Best Value
There’s a lot of features that the MFC-J6520DW printer by Brother offers but one that stands out is it’s ability to fax, print, scan and copy documents up to 11 x 17 inches – something many other models don’t. This is a mid size machine, but if you need more Brother also makes large capacity multifunctional fax machine printers.

Brother All-in-One Professional Series Inkjet with Full 11"x17" Capability and Wireless Printing

We chose the J6520DW multifunction printer from Brother as our Best Value product, not because it was the cheapest All-in-One on the market, but because it has an affordable price and still offers great features. It hosts all the essential features of a multifunctional machine - print, copy, scan and fax -- but the question is how well it completes all these functions. Let's discover some interesting features this device comes with:

  • Copy: The Brother MFC-J6520DW can copy up to a maximum of 23cpm (black) and 20cpm (color). The ISO based speed is 12cpm (black) and 9cpm (color). For the price, we think this is more than adequate to face the demand of a home or small office. This copier offers reduction/enlargement in 1% increments from 25%-400%, an added feature if you need a specific enlargement scale. A great extra for businesses considering this printer is the poster function that Brother offers and, with this particular model, up to 11” x 17”.
  • Scan: This model can scan in color and black & white up to 2400 x 2400 dpi from flatbed and 2400 x 1200 dpi from ADF. What sets this scanner apart from others is the BrotherTM iPrint&Scan feature that allows you to wirelessly scan to your phone.
  • Fax: With black & white and color faxing up to 3 seconds per page Brother doesn’t overlook the faxing function on this machine. It has a 33.6K bps Fax Modem speed and up to 200 page fax memory meaning no more waiting for, or losing, your faxes.

Perhaps the one of the best features of this All-in-One is its wireless capabilities. Brother offers the basic wireless setup or connection to an Ethernet network for office use but what stands out for us is the wireless printing from your mobile using AirPrint, Brother iPrint&Scan, WiFi Direct, Google Cloud Print and Cortado Workplace. This makes it easy to print on the go, wherever you are. In addition the free Web Connect and Cloud Apps by Brother create a new meaning to functionality. With these free Apps you can complete tasks that no other printer can do such as Outline & Copy, Outline & Scan or Outline & Remove. These Apps allow you to remove a portion of the document that you don’t want and copy or scan it without this information. This will save a lot of time editing and re-printing, copying or scanning documents on your PC. Brother Creative Center Templates allows you to print documents such as note-taking forms, calendars and other business documents you use often, right from the touch screen display.

Construction and Design
To make it easier for you to compare which inkjet All-in-One printer is best for you, let’s keep it in the same format as before, and talk about price first. The Brother Printer MFC-J6520DW Wireless Color Printer, Fax, Scanner & Copier retails at around 300 dollars, however, at the moment of this writing, you can get it on Amazon for under $150, making this All-in-One our Best Value item for this review. Although the initial upfront cost for the Brother MFC-J6520DW is higher than the previous HP 8610, this is not the only cost to take into consideration when buying a printer. The running costs for this machine have been dramatically reduced through Brother’s Super High Yield XXL replacement ink cartridges. The black cartridge offers an approximate 2400 page yield and a 1200 page yield for color. This is the highest we have seen from any printer, which can guarantee to lower your everyday running costs if you choose this model. Slightly smaller than the HP, the Brother All-in-One measures 21.8 x 17.0 x 9.7 inches. Brother has managed to keep this machine a reasonable size by offering landscape printing. The sleek, modern design is complimented by the 2.7” color touch screen that can access Web Connect and Brother Cloud Apps, for inventive ways to convert and edit documents. Some have commented that the photo quality on this printer isn’t the very best, however it is “near photo quality”. With USB compatible with PictBridge and SD and MemoryStick adapters Brother does try to make it even easier for their consumers to print photos quickly and easily. With a respectable duty cycle of 26,000 pages, and a recommendation of 250 – 1500 pages, the Brother Printer MFC-J6520DW is perfect for your home or work office.
Performance and Ease of Use
Once again, let’s have a look at the 5 performance qualities which are most important when choosing the perfect all-in-one printer; speed, print quality, paper tray capacity, page yield and memory.
  • Speed- This particular Brother model stands out from its counterparts for its high print speed. During Fast Mode the printer claims to reach speeds up to 35ppm (black) and 27ppm (color). The ISO print speed is 22ppm (black) and 20ppm (color). If you are working to a deadline, or in a busy office, speed could be one of the most important factors for you when deciding which printer to buy. If so, the Brother Printer MFC-J6520DW offers great print speed for a reasonable price.
  • Print Quality- If you plan to print important documents, such as a resume, you need it to look professional and crisp. Brother state their print resolution is 6000 x 1200 dpi (maximum). Some individual reviews suggest that, while the print quality is definitely passable, it is not the best out there particularly when it comes to graphics and photos. However, if you are looking for quantity over quality, the Brother All-in-One Professional Series Inkjet could be ideal for you.
  • Paper Tray Capacity- This model from Brother offers a standard 250 page tray capacity with a 35 page automatic document feeder. The most interesting feature of this model, and one reason it took our Best Value spot, is its ability to print, copy, scan and fax documents up to 11 x 17 inches. This is highly unusual for a printer of this size and cost.
  • Page Yield- Page Yield is so important when considering which printer to buy for your home or office. Even if you are not looking to print thousands of documents a month you still want to know that you’re getting the best value and won’t be replacing your ink cartridge every week. Although the regular ink cartridge replacement for this printer only yields 600 pages, as mentioned before, Brother offer an XXL replacement that boasts 4X the yield for black ink. You can expect an approximately 2400 page yield for black ink and 1200 page yield for color.
  • Memory- With this model you get the same memory size as the HP model, 128MB. However, the fax memory on this machine is double, with a 200 page fax memory. This is excellent if you are expecting to send or receive a lot of faxes. Fax memory is essential to avoid the complications of missed faxes during a power outage.
We have looked at all the features and specifications you can expect to get with the Brother Printer MFC-J6520DW, but as always, we want to know what real people thought when they bought this printer. Amazon reviewers awarded 4 out of 5 stars with 72% of reviewers giving it 4 or 5 stars. As with all products there were some mixed reviews. Some stated that they had a problem with the color intensity while others suggested it printed things out of alignment. We’ve found there are always naturally a small percentage of consumers that have problems with products, which is why you should read a variety of reviews before you make a decision. At the end of the day, this is still an excellent multifunction printer that comes at a reasonable price, so you should take it into account.
If your goal is to get the highest quality printing and photos, along with the ability to fax, scan and copy, then Expression Premium Small-in-One® All-in-One by Epson is a great choice. If you want to spend a little less money, the Epson WorkForce is another good choice for a wireless inkjet and fax combo.

Epson Expression Premium Small-in-One® All-in-One Printer with Fax, Scanner and Copier

Epson is a well-known electronics manufacturer and we were impressed by their products. For example, as with most multifunctional machines, the Epson Expression Premium Printer is an excellent device which offers print, copy, scan and fax functions. Alongside with those basic capabilities, this great printer also includes the following:

  • Copy: You can copy black & white, color, text & image and photos at a speed of 11cpm black and 8.1cpm color. This is not a bad speed for low level copying needs. Epson provides a variety of unique copying features such as auto- background removal, color restoration, scan photos to create coloring books, copy onto CD’s or DVD’s and create greeting cards without the need for a PC.
  • Scan: The scanner on the Epson Expression XP-820 uses a color flatbed with an automatic 2 sided ADF. You can expect a maximum of 9600 x 9600 dpi and a 4800 dpi optical resolution.
  • Fax: Faxing on this machine hasn’t been overlooked. You can fax in black and white or color at just 3 seconds per page. No need to worry about losing any faxes; this model has up to 180 pages fax memory.

If energy consumption is a concern of yours when it comes to using all these great features, you don’t need to worry. This printer is ENERGY STAR qualified, is recyclable, can use recycled paper and is RoHS compliant. Finally, a great feature of the Epson Expression Premium Wireless Printer/Fax is the functions it can complete without needing to connect or plug in your PC. You can select and print photos, auto correct photos, rotate, crop & enlarge, print photo ID and passport photos, choose more than one photo to print on one page, create photo greeting cards and coloring books. It’s the 21st century, so we think it’s safe to say that we would all like our All-in-One printers to have wireless capabilities. Epson doesn’t disappoint. Not only can you print wirelessly from your laptop or PC, but you can print from a mobile or tablet with the easy to setup and use apps Epson Connect, Epson iPrint, Epson Email Print, Apple AirPrint or Google Cloud Print. With all these options, it’s sure to be easy to print great photos wherever you are. Also, for those Throwback Thursday moments you can scan and upload old photographs directly to Facebook. With all these amazing features, all easily accessible with gesture navigation on the touch screen, it was an easy decision to choose this model as one of our top 5 All-in-One printer/fax machines.

Construction and Design
Luckily for us, the Epson Expression Premium Wireless Printer/Fax does not come with a Premium price, as at the moment of this writing, it is on sale on Amazon for a bit under 130 dollars. This is an extremely reasonable price for a multifunctional machine that can print, scan, copy and fax. Unlike the previous Brother model, Epson does not offer an astonishing XXL replacement ink cartridge. They do offer two different replacements, the 273 Standard-capacity and the 273XL High-capacity cartridges; however, the yields are not phenomenal. This is the first printer we came across that offers a higher yield for color than black and white printing with a 250 page yield for black but 300 pages for color (using the standard cartridge). With the average price of ink cartridges, this would put the price for one black-ink document at 5 cents and color photos at 14 cents (although this doesn’t include the cost for paper). Using the high capacity replacement ink, with a yield of 500 pages (black) and 650 pages (color), you can expect to pay an equal 5 cents for black but a reduced 10 cents for color. Ultimately, it could be a lot worse and, if you’re looking for the best photo quality, you can expect to pay a bit more for color ink. Epson claims to deliver “unbeatable photo quality” picture printing with results that are scratch, water, smudge and fade resistant. Actually, they state that their photos can last up to 200 years in album storage. With automatic red-eye removal and photo correction it’s easy to see how this model is geared toward photo printing. Epson also offers a wide variety of paper types for the very best results. You can choose from plain paper; Photo Paper Glossy; Premium Photo Paper Glossy, Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster; Presentation Paper Matte; Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte Double-sided and even Iron-on Cool Peel Transfer. The choices, however, do not end there. You can also choose from a range of paper sizes from 3.5” x 5” to 8.5” x 14”. If you are looking to create eye-catching borderless business documents, then the XP-820 can accommodate with borderless printing up to 8.5” x 11”. Don’t forget to clear some space in your home or work office, as the Epson Expression Premium Wireless Printer/Fax is not very compact measuring at 17.2” x 23.5” x 8.1” whilst printing. Although, this does include a 4.3” touch screen where you can control all major functions with Epson’s gesture navigation.
Performance and Ease of Use
The performance of the Epson XP-820 is focused on photo and color printing; therefore we can expect the specs to reflect this.
  • Speed- Speed should be an important factor if you’re have a high print demand and need the documents as fast as possible. However, if you are looking for top quality printing, you might have to wait a little longer. With ISO print speeds of 14ppm (black), and 11ppm (color), this is the slowest printer we have reviewed so far. If you are looking for duplex printing you can expect to print 5.4ppm (black) or 5ppm (color).
  • Print Quality- This is where your printer should make up for a slower print speed and this Epson doesn’t disappoint. The Epson XP-820 Wireless Inkjet Printer can print lab quality photos with a maximum resolution of 5760 x 1440 optimized dpi. For super sharp documents, the XP-820 model has 5 ink cartridges, the usual CMYK, as well as a Photo Black for eye-popping color. Similarly, to ensure only the sharpest lines for photo and text, this printer can drop as little as 5 droplets measuring just 1.5 picoliters.
  • Paper Tray Capacity- With a paper tray capacity of just 100 pages, this is not the largest we’ve seen. However, if you are planning to use this printer in your home or a small office this shouldn’t be an issue. Large scale copying should not be performed on this type of machine anyway. The Epson also features a 30 page Automatic Document Feeder and a separate paper tray to hold up to 20 sheets Premium Photo Paper Glossy. An unusual addition to this printer is the dedicated CD/DVD trays.
  • Page Yield- The ink yield for the standard cartridge is 250 pages (black) and 300 pages (color). If this is not enough to accommodate your needs you can purchase the 273XL Ink Yield cartridges with a yield of 500 pages (black) and 650 pages (Color). As we mentioned before this low yield compared with other printers is not necessarily a downfall considering the quality of documents you can print.
Overall, the Epson XP-820 is great for producing quality documents and especially top grade photos, but you may have to wait a little longer and pay a little more for this level of quality. Of course we did not choose this particular Epson model based on specs alone; we also took the word of 64% of Amazon users who rated this All-in-One 4 or 5 stars (as well as looking at a consensus of many other reviews). There were some complaints of the paper feeder and installation of ink cartridges, but these seemed to be isolated. Overall, the reviews of this product were very positive with 194 5-star reviews.
When it came to selecting a business class printer and fax combo to recommend, we could have chosen one any of the other brand because they all offer good quality high, capacity models – but we chose to feature Konica Minolta, a leader in business solutions and advanced document management technologies. The Bizhub 3320 is a black and white all-in-one device, but if you need color printing, the Bizhub C3110 retails for $2,159.00 but was on sale at Amazon for over 50% off when we last checked.

Konica Minolta Bizhub 3320 Printer, Fax, Scanner, Copier

The Konica Minolta Bizhub 3320 Multifunctional Printer is definitely a reliable companion in your home or business office! Konica has focused on quality rather than quantity when it comes to features. Unlike the other printers we have looked at here, the 3320 doesn’t have flashy LCD touch screens or multiple different compartments for specific paper types, it focuses on quality monochrome printing and copying and color scanning and faxing. Let's explore the numerous features of this printer:

  • Scan: Konica features color scanning up to 600 x 600 dpi. It can also scan to Email or scan to SMS.
  • Fax: With Super G3 faxing up to 600 x 600 dpi the 3320 is sure to cope with the faxing needs of an office environment.
  • Copy: It’s possible that copying is the “main” function of this all-in-one model, as Konica has created the 3320 able to copy up to 999 copies at 600 x 600 dpi. The first copy can be out in 6.5 seconds, followed by 35ppm or 16ppm for duplex copying. You can copy in sizes up to 8.5” x 14” and reduce/enlarge 25-400%.

The Konica Minolta Bizhub 3320 supports Ethernet network printing and also mobile printing through AirPrint or Google Cloud Print.

Construction and Design
When choosing an All-in-One printer, copier, scanner and fax machine for a business setting, you want it to be large enough to accommodate a heavy workload but be stylish and not overbearing. Konica Minolta is renowned for their innovative success in business multi-functional machines. It’s easy to see how the Bizhub 3320’s sleek black design would be a welcome addition to any office, school, clinic or professional setting. Measuring 15.3 x 18.6 x 18.4 inches, Konica have kept the footprint to this model small, without compromising on the machines capabilities. As expected, this model has the largest duty cycle of any MFP we’ve looked at here, at 50,000 pages per month. With Ethernet connectivity, this all-in-one is perfect for office/business use. Choosing the right MFP for your business is essential. It should meet your specific requirements and fall within your price range. If your business requires a high volume of printing or copying, but you don’t need to print photos or color documents, this monochrome model could be perfect for you. When we last checked, this product was at a price of around $570 on Amazon. It certainly won’t break the bank and with a quality brand such as Konica Minolta (who is the #1 Brand in Customer Loyalty) you can feel confident this machine will serve you well.
Performance and Ease of Use
Without all the fancy functions some All-in-One printers offer, the Bizhub 3320 focuses on quality black & white printing at a high volume (and hopefully for a long time).
  • Speed- If this printer is to be used in an office setting, it needs to be able to cope with the demands of several users over a long period of time. In a high pace professional setting, time is of the essence and you shouldn’t be disappointed with Bizhub’s 35 ppm high resolution B&W printing capabilities.
  • Print Quality- You can print in monochrome up to 1200 x 1200 dpi. This should be more than adequate for printing everyday business documents.
  • Paper Tray Capacity- The 3320 offers the standard 250 page paper tray. However, if this is to be used in a high demand office setting this wouldn’t be good enough, therefore, Konica have included space for another paper tray up to 550 pages. With the 50 page ADF, this take the total capacity up to 850 pages. The Konica Minolta Bizhub 3320 Multifunctional Printer is also capable of automatic duplex printing, saving you both time and effort when printed double-sided documents.
  • Page Yield- One obvious benefit if you don’t need to produce color prints is the money you can save on ink cartridges. This model's all-in-one printer the toner cartridge has a yield of 10,000 pages, a mile beyond what we’ve seen from any other printer. This is one feature that sets the Bizhub 3320 apart as a business class machine.
  • Memory- As expected, the Bizhub has a greater in-built memory than other printers, at 256MB.
To judge whether a Multi-Functional Product performs well, you first have to evaluate what functions you need it to complete. If large scale monochrome printing is what you need, it could be worth spending a higher initial cost and having a top quality product that’s built for endurance.
The PIXMA MX492 by Canon packs a lot of functions into a machine that won’t take up much space (or cost a lot). Print high resolution color documents and photos, make copies, scan and fax, not to mention you get wireless functionality too. This model doesn’t have an actual phone, but if you just need a basic fax with a phone, Canon makes those too.

Canon Pixma Printer, Fax, Scanner & Copier - Wireless w/ Mobile Printing, Airprint and Google Cloud Print Compatible

The last one in our list is a reliable and practical multifunction printer from Canon, a reputable brand that makes high-quality electronics. • Fax: Canon does not overlook the faxing capabilities on this model, using Super G3 Fax Speed of 33.6 Kbps you can send a black & white fax in 3 seconds or a color fax in 1 minute. This fax also includes up to 50 pages of fax memory and dialing in 19 locations. Other features include: Answering Machine Connectivity; Dial Search, Redial, Call Rejection and Fax Reception Reject.

At such an amazing price, you could be satisfied with only basic features, however, Canon also provide My Image Garden, which can organize and print photos using facial recognition, Calendar Organization, Layout Suggestions and Special Filters. Also, the MX462 model printer has a Quiet Mode, so you don’t need to worry about any late night printing-- you won’t be waking anyone up! Finally, with the excellent Canon PRINT app, you can print wirelessly from any mobile or tablet device. Similarly, AirPrint, Google Cloud Print and Mopria allow you to print from anywhere directly to your Pixma MX462.

Construction and Design
At the moment of this writing, the Canon Pixma All-in-One multifunction printer costs around $65 and we think it is a reasonable price for an entry-level printer. At just 13 pounds and 11.7 x 17.2 x 7.5 inches, the Canon Pixma MX492 (black) is the smallest of the series and the most compact MFP we have reviewed here. It is perfect to slot into any student room or home office as it’s 30% smaller than the MX models previously. This particular model also comes in white color variety. You might be worried that, to achieve such a smart, compact design, you would have to compromise on quality. You should be pleasantly surprised to know that, with a maximum dpi of 4800 x 1200, you can print quality photos and business documents. As long as you don’t mind waiting, you can produce a beautiful 4 x 6 inch photograph (borderless), in 70 seconds. To ensure your prints are looking as sharp and professional as possible, you should consider some of the specific paper types that Canon offer. These include: Plain Paper; Super Gloss Paper; Photo Paper Pro Platinum, Glossy; Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss; Matte Photo Paper; US #10 Envelope. And that’s just to name a few!
Performance and Ease of Use
As expected, the performance features are not as spectacular as some models we’ve seen; however, it is half the price, therefore you need to ask yourself what is most important to you, the very best specs or a low initial cost?
  • Speed- Print documents at a reasonable speed of 8.8 images per minute (ipm) black and 4.4ipm color.
  • Print Quality- Using Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) technology, producing as many ink droplets a minute as 2pl., you can produce black documents up to 600 x 600 dpi or color documents up to 4800 x 1200 dpi
  • Paper Tray Capacity- Being such as small machine, it comes as no surprise that you can hold only 100 pages in the Canon MX462 paper tray. This should be ample space for regular home use and it also comes with a 20 page ADF for easy copying and faxing functionality up to Legal size documents.
  • Page Yield- With such a low initial cost, you may be wondering, where is the catch? Well, with this printer, we don’t think there is one. Running costs will probably be higher than another all-in-one printer as the regular ink replacement cartridges (PG-245 and CL-246) yield only 180 pages each. However, you can opt for the XL variants, which yield a reasonable 300 pages each. Although printing costs may be higher than some larger machines we’ve reviewed today, it’s definitely acceptable for low level printing (just as long as you don’t print out your new book manuscript using this printer, you should be ok!).
So far, we are quite impressed with the specifications you can expect for such a low cost. Thanks to the reduced price, it’s no mystery why it’s had its fair share of reviews. One reason it made it onto our 5 inkjet all-in-one printer/fax machines is the fact that 50% of all reviewers gave this product 5 stars. Not everyone was this satisfied though. There were some minor complaints about set up, paper jams and paper alignment but they appeared to be isolated cases. This multifunction device won our hearts and it might win yours too!

How Do I Choose the Best All In One Inkjet Printer?

Before we go any further, in order to select the best printer and fax machine for personal use, home office or business, you need to ask yourself a very important question. Do you need a printer that faxes or a fax machine that prints; or maybe you want both? Depending upon your answer, you will have very different features and benefits that will be important. If you aren’t sure yet (or if you just want more information than we give here), we recommend taking a look at our more in-depth article – “How do I choose a fax machine??” – which also includes a review of 5 great fax machines. For those of you who want a piece of office equipment that will be used for a lot of printing, beyond faxing, another question to ask yourself is whether you also want to able to make copies and scan as well. If the answer is yes, then what you are looking for is a multi-functional printer, otherwise known as an “all-in-one printer.” Finally, and this brings us to the most important question regarding the focus of this review, you will need to decide whether or not you want an inkjet printer or a laser printer, as there are significant differences between them. If you are looking for information about all in one inkjet printer combination machines, you are on the right page. Otherwise you might want to be checking out our review of the top 5 all-in-one laser printers.

When considering the amount of money you will pay for an all-in-one printer, there are things to think about beyond the initial investment. The price needs to be considered in terms of value – how many functions and features are you getting for what you spend? You also need to think about how much it will cost to use the machine in terms of printing costs. The cost of the replacement ink and how many pages you get per cartridge will differ between machines. There are times when a much more expensive machine will have a lower lifetime usage cost both in terms of printing but because it may need fewer repairs and less maintenance.

When it comes to the functions that are included in all-in-one printers these days, printing, scanning, and copying, along with faxing, are pretty standard. What may differ is how well one does a particular job over another. For example, just because one machine can make copies, doesn’t mean that it’s meant to be a full time copy machine. Where some machines stand out from the others is whether they feature wireless and remote capabilities or not. This can mean that you can send documents from computers at different work stations without leaving your desk. It can also include the ability to send documents to be printed, faxed or even scanned from your mobile device – even if you are away from the office!

Construction and Design

When it comes to choosing what design you want for your printer, as we mentioned already, one of the big decisions you will need to make is whether you are going to go with inkjets or laser. Inkjets create the images or text by expelling tiny droplets of ink on your paper – thousands and thousands of them. There are many benefits of choosing an inkjet, including:

  • Lower Cost - The out of pocket expenses for purchase are typically lower for an inkjet than a laser, when comparing printers in the same class. The day-to-day usage costs varies machine by machine.
  • Size - This is a generalization, but when comparing printers within the same class, inkjets tend to be smaller.
  • Photo Printing - Inkjet printers can smoothly blend colors, creating photo prints with enhanced hues and tones. This is also true for printing high quality color documents and marketing materials like brochures. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t laser printers that can do great color printing – but in many cases, you will pay more.
  • Variety in Paper - As a whole, inkjet printers tend to have less paper jams and depending upon the model, you have a wide choice in papers that can be used including plain paper, glossy papers, textured papers, iron on transfers and more.
  • Speed - While the actual printing process for an inkjet is slower than a laser, they take less time to get started (they don’t have to warm up) and there it takes less time for a document to start printing from the time you “send it to print.”

On the downside, compared to a laser printer, because of the need to replace cartridges the day to day costs to use are higher, the actual printing is lower and you do need to let your documents dry because of the moisture from the ink. The bottom line is that if you want a lower cost machine and high quality color prints are your priority, then an inkjet is probably the right choice for you. Now the question is, what size or capacity do you need?

Performance and Ease of Use

In our review of fax machines as a whole, we go discuss in more detail the things that can really improve the performance and usability of printer, but the main things that you want pay attention are speed, print quality, paper tray capacity, page yield and memory (both for printing and faxing. A good all in one machine will have easy to follow instructions and a user-friendly interface. The actual “mechanics” of the machine like changing the toner, filling the paper tray and clearing any potential jams should also be simple.
