How Do I Choose the Best All In One Laser Printer?

Dashing around your office from your computer to the printer, to the scanner and then back to your computer is not an easy feat, even for the most athletic among us, and it’s not an efficient use of your time. An easy way out is simply getting an all-in-one laser printer that does all that. It will not only save you a lot of space; it will limit the dash or unintended workout sessions. Depending on the size of your office and how often you need to run around, you might even need to start your day with a pre-workout protein shake!

The best all-in-one printers have a good resolution and good print speed. They are capable of duplex printing and scanning, have wireless connectivity and reduce recurrent costs with high-yield ink cartridges. Some all-in-one printers also have color display, USB port, and memory card slot. Now before we take a look at important factors to consider in more detail, we must point out here that narrowing down our list to five was quite difficult. There were some great brands that could not make the cut which we feel you should be aware of. In your spare time, you can look at Ricoh All-In-One Laser Printers and Lexmark All-In-One Laser Printers. These two brands offer you great products. Let's now continue with our review.
The technology built into an all-in-one laser printer, which governs the available functions, is the main determinant of price. We would all love to buy products that have all the bells and whistles, but until money starts growing on trees, we will have to make do with what we can afford. From our research, high-end printers with advanced features and options cost an average of $350 and above. Printers at lower price points that still have the features required to adequately serve the purpose sell for about $150 or less, while you can also get mid-level models which will cost between $151 and $320.

There are also some cheap all-in-one laser printers we came across during our research, but they are poorly made and obviously substandard. They represent a false economy so we don’t recommend them – it’s worth spending enough to get a reliable, long-lasting piece of equipment.

The cost of using a printer is not really fixed, as buying the printer is just one part of the investment. There are recurring costs that come with having a printer. It’s important to consider the cost of consumables before investing in a printer. The price of laser toner cartridges varies. A high-capacity cartridge is expensive, but may be cheaper in terms of the cost per page.

Beyond toner, many laser printers will need replacements for waste cartridges, imaging units, and photo conductor units, so make sure you know what you’re getting into before buying the unit. Always look up the product page on the manufacturer website to see what consumable products are listed for it.
Printers are available in all shapes and sizes designed to meet different needs. How well a printer meets one's needs depends on the features it has. Getting a printer requires you to know which features will benefit you the most depending on what you need it for. The following are important features of all-in-one laser printers:
  • A fast enough print speed (think about volume)
  • Adequate resolution – 1200 is better than 600.
  • Connectivity – Do you want USB, wireless, or network?
  • Paper handling – Do you need a certain size or paper type?
  • Display – Does it tell you what you need?
  • Recurrent cost of toner, waste, etc.
This list will help you know which features you need in a printer. Read on for more detail on what these features mean for you.
Construction and Design
Many All-In-One Laser (AIOL) printers are Wi-Fi enabled, and they also have at least one USB 2.0 port and an Ethernet port for wired connections. With the wireless connectivity of your printer, multiple devices can connect to it and send jobs for printing. This is ideal for businesses, as it saves a lot of time. Connecting computers need to have the appropriate drivers installed. Some AIOL printers also have memory card slots that allow you to print documents from the memory card when a computer or a USB is not available.

Resolution is one of the most common specs used in marketing these machines. It simply means the number of dots in an inch of print. For example, a typical 600x600dpi means that there are 600 dots vertically and horizontally in a one-inch square of what is printed. There are cases where the numbers of vertical and horizontal dots are not the same. This is because the print head has a fixed number and density of nozzles, which is a determinant of the horizontal resolution, while the vertical resolution is determined by how fast the paper feed mechanism can push paper through the printer. The horizontal resolution is what dictates the resolution of the printer.

The lowest resolution you can get in most modern printers is 600dpi, which will produce good text prints. If you will be printing tiny text and graphics with fine lines, a 1200dpi printer will produce better results. When it comes to printing photos, 600dpi is plenty for most images. Photographic paper types can also help improve the look of photo prints with glossy coatings.

AIOL printers print on the standard letter and legal-size papers. They can also print on envelopes, and their input and output trays can hold at least 100 sheets at a time. Some AIOL printers also feature advanced paper handling capabilities, such as tabloid-size printing, automatic document feeders for faxing and copying as well as duplex printing. Duplex printing (printing on both sides of the paper) saves you a lot of time and paper. Printers with this feature usually use reverse auto document feeding, which takes the sheet back in by itself so you don’t have to. They also have duplex scanning too! How awesome is that? Printers usually bend paper while moving it from the in-tray to the out-tray. In cases where you want to print on a stiff media such as thick card, you will need a printer that runs paper through a straight path.
Performance and Ease of Use
Some AIOL printers are capable of mobile printing, which lets you connect your smartphones to the printer and print documents from your phone. Popular apps that aid mobile printing are: Apple’s AirPrint, which lets you print from Apple devices, Mopria, which lets you print directly from some new-model Android devices, Google Cloud Print, which allows you to securely print your documents from your mobile devices. Imagine being able to send a document from your smartphone to the office so your colleagues can start working on it before you get there. Cool, right?

Most AIOL printers have color LCD displays that let you interact with the printer. This allows you to input the email address you want to send a scanned document to, the number of pages you want to print or the tray you want to use. Some high-end printers have full-color touchscreen displays, which is a great advancement compared to the blinking lights of older printers.

The print speed refers to the number of pages a printer can print in a minute, and it is denoted as ppm (pages per minute). The print speed for plain text is significantly higher than print speed for photos. Some models have speeds reaching 32ppm for both black and color. Depending on what you need an AIOL printer for, print speeds can be an important feature.
