ASUS is quite aware that even though our budgets differ just as our needs differ, one thing will not change: the desire to get the best solutions that our money can buy. And, if you’re one of the many laptop shoppers who feel buying a workhorse on a budget isn’t possible, the ASUS Chromebook C302 proves otherwise.

This little guy might look like a proper gentleman but trust us, it packs a lot of punch. It’s fitted with a robust Intel Core m3 processor and can power through tasks, opening and running programs with seamless speed. A 16-gigabyte storage space coupled with a 4-gigabyte RAM also provides plenty of space for programs and their data to be cached, loaded, and run quickly and smoothly.

This award-winning ASUS Chromebook (we didn't mean that figuratively, it actually won the Laptop Mag Editors’ Choice Award) is a flip laptop with a smooth and flexible hinge that can be rotated a full 360 degrees to give a number of interesting and stylish ways to use and enjoy the Chromebook—such as the laptop or tablet mode, and tent or stand mode.

The 12.5-inch full high-definition touchscreen allows you to enjoy this Chromebook in any mode and the Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) ensures that the video quality is crystal clear. For your added convenience, an anti-glare feature protects your eyes from fatigue and a full keyboard with 1.4-millimeter key travel provides a solid feel while you type. The keyboard also features a palm rejection element that prevents accidental cursor movement by differentiating between palm and actual fingertip contact.

This Chromebook is Android app-ready so you'll be able to use your preferred apps and also get access to apps from Google Chrome Web Store such as Google Photos and Google Docs. If high-speed online and offline connections are what you're looking for, then you're probably already looking at the right guy for the job; with the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi speedster, Bluetooth 4.0, and the versatile USB 3.1 port, this Chromebook promises speedy transfers.

ASUS ROG Strix Scar Edition Gaming Laptop - Available in 15.6 Inch and 17.3 Inch Sizes & 6 Style Options

Every gamer (and the people that love them) knows that gaming is serious business. It’s no longer viewed as the exclusive reserve of social misfits, but as an incredible pastime and money-spinner for the young and old and everyone on any rung of the social ladder. ASUS is quite aware of this and supplies the tools needed to enjoy the ultimate gaming experience.

The ASUS ROG Strix Scar Edition Laptop is one such tool; it’s a powerful laptop with features that are sure to leave you nodding in satisfaction. Okay, let's take a look at these features. Yes, and we'll start with the (drumroll please) display…

This laptop has a sweet combination of high technology elements in its display; it's designed for First Person Shooter (FPS) perspective with a 144 hertz IPS-style display on a 15-inch screen, all combined to produce pictures that are so real you'll find yourself moving and your heart beating in time with the characters and music in the game. What's more, NVIDIA G-SYNC display tech and NVIDIA GTX GPU in this laptop mean that you'll have quicker refresh rates and smoother visuals.

Now it's on to the processors and disk space. You'll find an i7-7700HQ Intel Core processor with 2.8 gigahertz that can be made 10 times faster in Turbo; that's plenty of horsepower for intensive gaming and for regular computer programs that one needs for other mundane—but equally important—everyday computing tasks. The 16 gigabytes of 2400 megahertz DDR4 memory ensures a hiccup-free transition with multitasking and the 256-gigabyte PCle SSD means better game speeds and texture loading time.

The keyboard on this bad boy is much like your desktop keyboard layout with 4 hotkeys and RGB-backlit zones that can be customized to your tastes. For comfortable key striking with fast and accurate results, the keys have a 1.8-millimeter travel, 0.25-millimeter keycap curve, and Overstroke technology that's exclusive to ROG.

This ASUS VivoBook Flip is a 14-inch two-in-one laptop with a durable 360-degree hinge, a high-precision touchscreen, and a colorfully rich and clear display that gives a beautiful laptop-to-tablet experience. We recommend the ASUS X556UQ-NH71 VivoBook if you're in the market for a higher-end flip laptop with bigger specs.

ASUS VivoBook Flip - Available in 11.6, 14 & 15-Inch Sizes & 7 Styles

Not everyone is looking for a laptop with high-end specs and heavy-duty features. Some of us just want something with the latest version of the basic stuff in a stylish package that's easy on the eyes and on the muscles that we use to carry them. The laptops with which we can efficiently carry out our daily tasks and increase our productivity—and all that without breaking the bank. ASUS, being the great brand that it is, ensures that such folks are not left hanging; hence, the VivoBook series.

This ASUS VivoBook Flip holds the title of the thinnest and the lightest of all the laptops in its company's range of 14-inch VivoBook Flips. It has an amazingly thin 15.4-millimeter profile (that's 0.6 inches, by the way), a 3.3-pound weight, and a special 14-inch display that we'll gush about shortly. An ultra-narrow NanoEdge display bezel makes it possible for the 14-inch screen to fit into the average 13-inch laptop's frame.

The touchscreen and 360-degree hinge are up next. This classy VivoBook has highly precise touch sensors that have been spaced at a 6-millimeter (0.24 inches) distance from each other so that you get the most responsive touch experience on all parts of its 14-inch screen. A stylus can also be used on the screen, but it's sold separately. The hinge can be rotated a complete 360 degrees; this 2-in-1 device shuns the traditional style where the screen is detachable from the keyboard—rather, it sports 2 robust metal hinges that hold the two together and make it possible to enjoy this VivoBook in stand and tent modes.

Another set of features we must talk about include the processor and drive. This device is powered by a 2.6-gigahertz Intel Core m3 processor and has 4 gigabytes of RAM space—both of which account for its speed and smooth, seamless operation.

Here are a few other VivoBooks you might like:

ASUS C201 11.6 Inch Chromebook - Available in 3 Colors

The ASUS C201 11.6 Inch Chromebook weighs just under 2 pounds and has a 0.7-inch profile making a super slim, lightweight dream of a laptop. You can carry it around with ease in a bag or hold it in your hands without having to feel like Atlas, the Greek god condemned to carry the world on his shoulders.

For your typing, scrolling, and clicking convenience, the touch pad is large—the largest on any Chromebook ever built—so that whether you've got fingers like a pianist or a builder, there will always be plenty of room to maneuver the cursor to your satisfaction.

The Rockchip Quad Core processor on this laptop has a speed of 1.8 gigahertz and the 4-gigabyte RAM provides plenty of space so that not only does the laptop boot in seconds, but opening of multiple apps and multitasking between them is fast and smooth as well—and that's just when you're offline. When you're browsing the web and working with several browser tabs at once, thanks to the aforementioned features, transition from one tab to another is fast and beautifully seamless. Since we're talking about the internet, the wireless connectivity with 802.11 ac gives you three times the speed of previous Wi-Fi versions. Enjoy fast data transfer and sharing with the USB ports, SD card, and micro HDMI reader on this laptop.

How Do I Choose the Best ASUS Laptop?

ASUSTeK Computer Inc., aka ASUS, is a computer hardware and electronics company originating in Taiwan. Conceived over 27 years ago, ASUS slotted in at the #4 position in the list of largest PC vendors in 2015 by initial sales. That’s not all—the company has also appeared in some of the world’s most esteemed publications, including InfoTech 100 and Asia’s Top 10 IT Companies. With a current brand value of more than an astounding $1.5 billion, ASUS makes everything from innovative desktops, computer peripherals, and even gaming laptops and wearables.

Many of us may have wondered about the meaning of ASUS and maybe even the pronunciation. Here's a short true-life story that does more than solve those two problems; it tells you something about the company's penchant for keeping its eyes on the prize—its desire to be and stay at the top. Here it goes…

When the company's founders were going through the sometimes-taxing process of looking for a name, they remembered the mythical winged horse of the Greeks and decided they liked the guy. So, Pegasus was chosen. There was a small problem though: whenever there was going to be an alphabetical listing of companies, theirs wouldn't be anywhere near the top of the list and the winged horse, in spite of all his strength, wouldn't be able to do anything about it. A decision was made: shorten the name to—we're sure you can guess correctly—ASUS.

Before we leave you to enjoy the rest of the review, we'd like to advise you on something. If you find a laptop with the specs you desire and you hear a voice in your head trying to convince you to settle for something cheap, squash it.
ASUS laptops are available at different prices; whether you're shopping on a budget or bringing out the big guns, there is a great ASUS laptop with your name on it (you understand we're being figurative here, right? Unless one orders a customized laptop, now that's a thought). We found some of these selling for as low as $400 and others had price tags of up to $1900 and even more.

The difference is easy to understand when you consider the fact that one laptop might have a 1.6GHz single-core processor while another has a 2.8GHz dual-core processor—and still another might be fitted with a 4GB RAM, or perhaps a 2GB RAM. These differences in laptop specifications are largely responsible for the price differences.

You might come across some dirt-cheap ASUS laptops, but we have our doubts concerning their authenticity. Therefore, we’d advise you to stay away from them. As you probably gathered from the info above, spending a little more can go a long way towards getting the best laptop for you.
Knowing what to look for in a laptop makes the entire search process easy and even fun. We've listed the basic features you should look for as you search for your ASUS laptop:
  • Processor
  • RAM
  • Storage
  • Display
  • Extras
Construction and Design
Let's start with the size of the laptop. Gone are the days of the Mainframe computer—a computer so big you had to dedicate a room to it. Computers have become much, much smaller and lighter, tools better suited for today's fast-paced world than their ginormous ancestor. If you're constantly on the go, a lightweight laptop with a stylishly thin profile should be your best pick as you wouldn't want to deal with something so heavy it would qualify as billable luggage. However, if yours will be sitting on a dedicated desktop space, we don't see how size is much of an issue.
Performance and Ease of Use
There are a number of things that you should consider when purchasing your ASUS laptop. These include the RAM and storage, its display size, its processor, and what extras (if any) it comes with. Let’s go into more detail below.

RAM and Storage

RAM and storage are important features of a laptop and the meaning of the two terms are often muddled up, so we'll try to sort that out first. RAM is the abbreviated form of Random Access Memory. It's also known as volatile memory, temporary memory, or memory. In its physical form, it's a number of chips arranged in a series in your computer which are electrically powered. It's the fastest means of storing data on your device and that's where running programs are stored. Data stored here is only available as long as the computer is running; if there's a power failure or you shut down the computer, data in the RAM will be lost. A large RAM means more space for system files, applications, and smooth multitasking.

Storage, on the other hand, refers to hard disk drive or drive space. The popular storage options in laptops today are HDD (Hard Drive Disk), SSD (Solid State Drive), and eMMC (Embedded Multimedia Card). The HDDs are less-expensive and have a lot of space compared to the SSD. They are the traditional storage drives but they don’t have the speed of the SSD. There is also the risk of data loss when one accidentally drops the laptop as the HDD parts can be damaged, but SSD has no such problem. eMMCs were originally used in phones but they're now widely integrated into laptops. They're not as fast as the SSD neither do they have large capacities, but they're less expensive.

Display Size

Now on to a laptop's display size. A lot of us are quite content with small (11- to 13-inch) screens for our purposes. If all you need a laptop for is to create and edit documents, presentations, emails, and similar content, we doubt you'll appreciate the extra bulk of larger screens. For the movie buffs, gaming aficionados, and web surfers, the larger the screen size the better; throw in a high picture resolution and it'll be a story with happily-ever-afters.

The processor is another feature you don't want to ignore. There are two things to understand here and they are the processor speed and the number of cores. Processor speed is measured in Gigahertz (GHz) and the simple thing to know here is that the higher the value, the faster the laptop will be at converting input to output, commands to results, and raw data to useful information. We shouldn't forget that since nothing good comes easy, a higher speed also equals a higher cost to you.

Now for the number of cores. You'll see stuff like dual-core, quad-core, and octa-core. They simply mean 2 cores, 4 cores, and 8 cores, respectively.

By the way, what's a core? It's that part of the computer that's also called the CPU or the processor—yes, core is basically another way to say processors. Here's what you should know about this one: The more cores there are, the easier it will be to run multiple programs at a time. So, an octa-core is better and smoother than a quad-core at multitasking, which is smoother than a dual-core, which in turn is better than a single-core processor at it.

There are other features that are not basic, but their presence makes laptops more convenient and improve the whole experience. These include anti-glare screens, backlit keyboards, rubberized backs or pads, etc. If you find such on the ASUS laptop you're considering, prepare yourself for a more-enriching experience.
