When shopping for a new bed for your infant, you will have to make the decision on whether to get a unisex crib, a baby girl crib, or a baby boy crib. The only difference between these is color choices— which these days are becoming less gender specific. Our recommendation is to go for a neutral crib and then accessorize the way you want it! For this reason, our featured beds are gender neutral, however many brands offer beds in different colors — including our featured brands. Here are a few examples before we get to our reviews.

Best Crib for Baby Boys and Girls — Traditional Cribs Vs Convertible Cribs Vs Portable Baby Cribs

Research shows that babies spend an average of 4623 hours of sleep during their first year. How will you as a parent make sure that they have a sound sleep to ensure good health? Apart from proper care and good feeding, they need a good crib to sleep in. As an expectant parent, with so many options to choose from, you may be wondering, how do I choose a crib for my baby? Do I go for a bassinet, a baby crib, a convertible crib, or a portable travel crib?

With so many brands and products to choose from, the world of cribs can be confusing. Lucky for you, you’ve got us to do the hard bit for you! Apart from the five brands we’ve featured in our review, there’s a couple more we want to mention. Dream on Me is a family run business that manufactures multiple high-quality convertible cribs. One of their innovative cribs worth checking out is the Dream on Me Synergy 5-in-1 Convertible Crib. It offers great value for money because you can use it as a crib, toddler bed, day bed and a full-sized bed.

Another brand worth a mention is Stork Craft. They’ve been around for over 70 years, manufacturing high quality baby and kids’ furniture. They even manufacture furniture for leading brands like Graco. With multiple convertible cribs to choose from, Stork Craft is a top choice for parents. Their Storkcraft Princess 4-in-1 Fixed Side Convertible Baby Girl Crib is engraved with adorable ribbons cutouts in the wood panels.

Although a lot of cribs, especially convertible ones, can be quite expensive, it is possible to get a crib on a budget. We’ve even got a separate review dedicated to cribs under $200. Now let's get back to our baby cribs and find out what aspects you should take into account if you decided to by one.

When it comes choosing a crib, there is a wide price range – from under $100 all the way to several thousands of dollars for custom made, high end cribs. Our research shows that cheap cribs may not be as sturdy, safe or reliable as ones that are better made, but that doesn’t mean that you have to break the bank. What we do know though is that price alone, should never be the only yardstick for picking a crib.

Because we at TopProducts understand that most parents are working within a budget, with lots of expenses that will come up along with the birth of your little one, the models that we have chosen all cost less than $400 (when we last checked).  However, if you are looking for a luxury baby crib that won't break the bank, then Belle Isle Furniture and Evolur Nursery Collections are a good place to start.

You might be happy to find out that baby cribs usually come with a variety of additional features that may suit your needs. For example, some come with a mattress and others don’t. This is a matter of personal preference because you may be a parent who would prefer to select the mattress separately so that you can get the exact type and style you want. If the crib does come with a mattress that you will be using, make sure that it is one of good quality and meets safety standards.

Beyond this, there are cribs that offer even more than just a place for your infant and baby to sleep. Some baby beds come with a changing table as well as storage drawers. And then of course there are the great features and benefits of convertible baby cribs. These cribs can easily convert to a toddler bed or daybed as your child grows, and some can even become the headboard and footboard for a full sized bed. What makes these types of cribs a popular choice, is that they save you money and serve a lot of purposes as your child grows.

Finally, if you’re not looking for a traditional style crib, or also need one that you can take places with you, many portable ones come with extra features such as built in rocking motions, changers, adjustable levels for different age ranges, as well as ones that can convert into feeders, seats and/or playpens.

Construction and Design

How a crib is constructed and designed is an important factor to have in mind when considering a safe place where you will put your newborn, as well as when they start to get bigger and on to toddlerhood. There are different things to consider based on the age range of the child who will be sleeping in the crib. Firstly, you’ll want to decide which type of crib to purchase.

Here is a general overview of the four types to help you in making your decision.

  • Bassinet: A bassinet, also known as a cradle is a bed that is specially made for babies from birth to about four months. Some people refer to a bassinet as Moses basket but is different because Moses baskets are kept on the floor while a bassinet is made to either hang on a balance so that it can be swung around and give baby a rocking motion, or for non-rocking style, there is a higher base so that your baby is on the same level as your bed which is great for “co-sleeping” during the early days without having your infant in your actual bed (which pediatricians say is not safe, nor does it allow your baby to sleep alone). For this review, we chose to include bassinets that have multi-functions, rather than the traditional standalone type (we will review bassinettes separately).
  • Crib: The term baby crib can be used in a broad way to describe all the different types of beds with high sides designed for infants, babies and toddlers, or it can be used to specifically for just infants who can no longer stay in a bassinet and babies. For parents who don’t want to use a cradle or bassinet, there are ones that have adjustable levels to meet the needs of parents of a newborn or infant. There are many different types of baby cribs available and this review will help you to know which one to choose.
  • Convertible Crib: A convertible crib is a type of crib that can be modified for use from infancy to toddler-hood, and beyond by actually turning in to a child’s bed. Some can actually be turned into daybeds and full size beds, making them last for even more of your child’s life. There are many convertible cribs in the market today with the popular ones being the 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 options. If you are looking at investing in a crib that will go beyond your child’s first few years, this review will help you to determine what style is best for you.
  • Portable Crib: A portable crib is designed to be easily moved from one place to another, but there are two types. The first is a solid bed that is designed with wheels which make it possible to simply roll the crib from room to room. If you are always on the move and want your baby near you at all times, you may want a portable baby crib with wheels. For this type, you should always look for one that has good wheel locks to keep it in one place when your child is in it – especially for those more mobile toddlers in their “terrible twos.” The other type of portable baby crib, the one for which the term is more commonly used, are cribs that actually fold down to a compact shape so that you can take it with you in your car to another location. For people who travel, or make frequent trips to relatives who don’t have a crib set up for your little one, foldable travel cribs are a great choice. Some can even convert to play pens for toddlers.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission in the USA sets out some safety standards for baby cribs. For example, a crib with vertical slats or bars must not have a space bigger than 2- 3/8 inches (60 mm) apart. This prevents your baby from slipping through or getting stuck between them.

Another factor to consider when choosing the safest crib has to do with the actual design and style. No matter how pretty it may look, you should get one without finials or any scrollwork, but rather choose a simpler design and makeup. This is to prevent strangling or other accidents that can happen when baby’s clothing gets tangled in those details. For toddlers, long straight bars and slats also don’t give them any place for them to use to grab a foothold to climb out. However, this doesn’t mean that they can’t climb OVER the sides. For this, you need two things – cribs with adjustable heights so as your child gets bigger, you can lower the base so that it is too high for those little legs to reach over the side and climb out.

The other thing you absolutely need to do is not keep your toddler in a bed that is not designed for his or her age range. When a child discovers they're finally big enough to climb up and out of their crib, you'll have a hard time stopping them. Not only does it make it so that your child can be up and about in the middle of the night, but it poses a serious risk of slips and falls. This is where cribs that convert to toddler beds, either with or without a side rail are a fantastic way to not only keep your child safe, but also save money.

Finally, you need to consider the actual construction quality of the crib. Needless to say, make sure that the crib is made from child-safe materials and coatings, especially if it is painted. You should get one that is designed to last, one that is strong and durable. In fact, durability is one of the standards tested required by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA). All the cribs we have reviewed passed the durability test so you can be sure that you are getting a durable product when you get ones of these.

Performance and Ease of Use

Many baby cribs come with attached roller castors. These make it possible for the crib to move from one room to another. As we have already mentioned, you need to check the crib you want to purchase to make sure that the rollers lock into place when you have it moved to the place you want. Some cribs come with teething rails attached to the top of the rails – child-safe, durable plastic covers that prevent your child from biting into the wood rails.

Another thing to note when choosing a baby crib is to make sure that it is easy for you to get your baby in and out of the crib. You have to decide if you need a crib that has one or two drop down sides for easy access. For example, if you are going to locate the crib near a wall, you might need one side down. But if you are going to keep it in the middle of the room, you might want a crib with the two sides down to allow you easy access to the baby from both sides. The drop sides should have secure, child-safe locks and not easily drop down unless you want them to – keeping your baby safe inside (and stopping those ingenious toddler escape artists from getting out).

Finally, in terms of safety, always look for a crib where the mattress can fit in snugly in place so that your baby can not get little arms, legs and feet stuck, or worse yet their head or face which can pose a threat of smothering. Also, the crib should have an adjustment for different mattress heights. There should be several positions for the mattress, which should also lock tightly in place. Beds with adjustable levels for the mattress also help to make it easier for you to reach down to pick up your child, based upon their age and size.

These five baby cribs we have reviewed are the ones making waves in the market right now. You can't go wrong with any of them as they are beautifully designed and made to keep your baby safe from harm. Go ahead and get one of these and give your little one a good night sleep.

Baby Crib FAQs

How to get a baby to sleep in a crib
Getting a baby to sleep in a crib can be a nightmare for new parents. Ideally, the end game should be to train the baby to sleep independently. The best technique, in this case, is to start by placing the baby in the crib when awake, but a little sleepy. Then check up on the baby every few minutes. Eventually, the baby will fade off to a gentle slumber. Do this routinely to develop the habit.
When to move baby to a crib
Moving the baby to a crib can be practised anywhere between 3 and 6 months. However, if the baby is still comfortable in the bassinet, you might not have to make the transition just yet. On the other hand, waiting too long can also result in some resistance from your baby. You want to find a balance between the two.
How to keep baby warm in crib
There are many ways you can keep your baby warm in a crib. The simplest is to place a heating pad or hot water bag to warm the crib before placing the baby inside. Make sure to take it out, so the crib doesn’t get too warm. Additionally, you can use cotton blankets and fitted cotton sheets or cover the baby’s hands and legs with mittens and socks.
How to keep baby from rolling over in crib
The best way to keep your baby from rolling over is to position them on their back. Since most newborns don’t have enough strength to move, they’ll likely stick to this position. You can also consider getting a safe baby sleeping bag, which keeps them steady. Alternatively, you can tuck a blanket around your baby, so they don’t wriggle under it.
When to move baby out of crib
While there is no specific age when you can move your baby out of the crib, toddlers are typically ready to make the switch at around 18 months to 3 years. You don’t want to do this too soon, either. You see some babies develop agility quick and start climbing out of the crib. Don’t let this rush you into the transition. Take your time with the little ninja.
