First, not all batteries work for all kinds of devices or projects; you’ll have to get batteries as your device or project demands. And equally important is the fact that batteries contain really toxic stuff, so you might want to be careful about leaking and disposal so you don’t hurt the environment or, even worse, yourself or loved ones.

C batteries aren’t too expensive, thankfully, which means that you do not have to consider getting a cheap C battery. The first thing we will discuss is the chemistry of C batteries. Batteries can be classified into different categories based on their chemistry, and we will see those categories now:
NiMh: This is the most popular of all the categories of batteries, probably because it offers the most value. Also, it’s rechargeable and, because it has next to zero memory effect, it attains full capacity with every charge, without losing any part of its capacity.
NiCd: These guys are getting phased out fast. Although they quite resemble the NiMh, they are quite different in the sense that they have memory effect. So, quite unlike their distant cousins, if you don’t completely drain out the battery, and you recharge it to full capacity regardless, your battery will begin to lose capacity little by little.
Alkaline: A reason this type of battery is quite common, in spite of the hazards it presents to the environs, is that it’s the least expensive of the different types. The only problem is that they are only inexpensive options if you just need them short term; otherwise, the need for constant replacement makes them quite costly options.
Lead Acid: Although pretty weighty, these are high capacity and they are pretty affordable, too.
LiPo: These have started becoming the in-thing in the world of batteries today. One, they are lightweight; two, they have pretty good capacities; three, their discharge rates are really high. But then, you have to be sure that this is the battery you want to use before buying your electronics, as the voltage increases by 3.7volts.
Performance and Ease of Use
Now, nominal voltage: This is the voltage at which a motor delivers its highest power output in relation to its efficiency ratio. When a motor is operated at this voltage, you can be assured of a long life.
Capacity: This helps us determine the length of time a battery will keep working when operating at a particular voltage and when discharging at a particular discharge rate. So, say you choose a 12-volt, 2-Ampere/hour battery set – it means that these batteries will power a motor that consumes 2 Amperes of current for one hour non-stop, or one that consumes 1 Ampere for 2 hours, or one that consumes 0.5 Ampere for 4 hours. You get the trend, right?
Finally, the discharge rate: You have to choose a battery that discharges properly at the required current, else the device to be powered won’t run. So, ensure you look out for that.
