How Do I Choose the Best Chromebook?

First announced at the I/O conference in May 2010, Chromebooks are web-centric devices that are powered by Google’s exclusive Chrome operating system. These devices weren’t a hit when first launched, but today have successfully carved a niche market of their own, mostly due to their lightweight designs and smaller number of moving components. Instead of shipping with traditional software applications such as Photoshop and Office, Chromebooks rely on a series of web apps that are compatible with the Chrome ecosystem. The Chrome OS is also available on portable devices, such as the Asus ChromeBit CS10 and HP Chromebox, for you to enjoy Chrome OS on any screen.

One popular feature of the Chromebook is its compact display which rarely exceeds 14 inches. This means that they are usually lightweight devices with a lot of functionality. They are reminiscent of the Notebooks in this regard, but while a Notebook can run any operating system, a Chromebook, as already stated, runs the Linux-based Chrome operating system. Depending on the RAM, processor, and some other features, a Chromebook's price will vary from pricey to budget-friendly. This means that you will find one that will work for your price range.
Price
Chromebooks are available for every budget. You can find them for as low as $190 to as much as $1100 and more. It all depends on the features the Chromebook has. For instance, a Chromebook with a large RAM and high-tech display, high-speed processors, and some additional high-tech features will definitely cost more than one with lower specs. We came across a number of cheap Chromebooks, but we didn't consider them as they fell below our standard of quality. You’ll do well to avoid them too.
Features
There are a few basic things you should know before you hit the stores in search of your Chromebook. These basic things are the important features that, when understood, will make your search for the best Chromebook a lot easier. Some of these features include:
  • Processor
  • RAM
  • Storage
  • Display
  • Battery
  • Size
Construction and Design
Chromebooks are basically smaller and thinner than your average laptop. They are a lot more portable and easier to carry. The largest display is about 15 inches, but the most popular sizes are from 11 inches to 13 inches. If you don't mind a small display screen, the 11- to 13-inch models are great; not only will they fit into most bags, but kids can also handle them with ease. If, on the other hand, you're in search of a larger display screen for work or a more enjoyable experience online, you can choose one with a bigger display size.
Performance and Ease of Use
There are three main things that you should watch for when looking at the performance and ease of use of a Chromebook. These are: the RAM, the processor, and its battery life. Let’s go into more detail below.

RAM

RAM is an important feature in computing and electronic devices, and naturally, in Chromebooks as well. RAM means random access memory. It can also be called memory or primary memory. Data is collected and temporarily stored while you're running different programs on the device. Browser tabs, background apps, etc., are stored on the RAM. It's a temporary storage which means that should the Chromebook power off, the data stored there would be lost. That is why you have tabs reload and background apps close when you reboot your device. A larger RAM means that more tabs and apps can be run without slowing down your device, which is good for multitasking; but if you aren't looking for a workhorse, a smaller RAM should suffice.

Processor

A processor is a small chip found in computers. Basically, it receives data as input from the keyboard, mouse, and other input components and sends back appropriate information via output components. The most common processors are made by ADM and Intel. A processor's speed is measured in Gigahertz (GHz); a higher Gigahertz value indicates greater processor speed, which in turn promises a smoother multitasking experience.

Battery Life

Take note of the battery life of a Chromebook before you decide on one. They generally have long battery lives which can be anywhere from 7 to 11 hours. For those of us who are constantly on the go, a laptop with long battery life will make a better travel buddy than one with a battery that will start blinking when you're only just getting started.

What is the Best Chromebook?

Answering the question, "What tasks do I intend to accomplish with my Chromebook?" is a great first step to finding the best one for you. Knowing that will help you decide how the features you've seen in our guide will influence your Chromebook purchase.

ASUS is an internationally-acclaimed Taiwan-based developer and manufacturer of consumer electronics and computer hardware. It was established in 1989—a period that was yet to see Taiwan establish itself as a force in the computer industry. Intel used to send its processor prototypes to a particular company to be tested on its computers, while computer companies in Taiwan had to wait about six months before they got the processors. Well, all that changed when ASUS, being the forward-thinking company that it is, approached the processor maker with a motherboard that it had made for one of Intel's processors without having even seen the thing. Intel seized the opportunity to ask ASUS about a problem it was having with one of its motherboards; a mutual back scratching was done and Intel discovered that the motherboard ASUS had built for a processor it had never seen actually worked pretty well with the processor—no modifications were needed. A mutually beneficial arrangement was made and ASUS has been receiving Intel samples before its competitors ever since.

The ASUS Chromebook Flip has been described in many quarters as the best Chromebook for professional and casual use. It has a chassis that is made of aluminum metal and a pair of robust hinges which allow the Chromebook to be opened all the way back so that it can be used as a tablet whenever you want it. Thanks to the sturdiness of the hinges, it can also be used in tent and stand modes without any troubles.

It’s powered by a 2.2-gigahertz Intel Core processor and has a 4-gigabyte RAM which means that you can open and smoothly operate many tabs on your device at a time—good news for multitaskers. Its startup time is significantly shorter thanks to its super-fast processor. Further, with a 0.5-inch profile and a 2.65-pound weight, not only is this Chromebook super-thin, it's also lightweight. A great combination for those of us who agree that light is right. This classic piece of computing beauty can be carried without the stress or the fear of going on an unplanned muscle-building session.

Other features include:
  • Battery life of 10 hours so that you can work or play anywhere, anytime
  • 12.5-inch full HD display for a brighter watching experience
  • Anti-glare features to protect your eyes from reflecting light rays
  • A responsive touchscreen to be enjoyed in laptop or tablet mode
  • Palm rejection on keyboard to detect only fingertip contact and prevent accidental cursor movement
Don’t forget to decide on which of its configurations is best for; there are three to choose from. Take a look!

Samsung is a brand that has acquired a lot of feathers to its hat. It was founded as a trading company by Lee Byung-chul in the year 1938. It soon began to diversify its interests into other areas including insurance, securities, food processing, retail, textiles, etc. Towards the end of the 1960s, it made its first and fateful foray into the electronics market and has been on an upward journey ever since. It's a highly decorated brand and some of its achievements include: 10-year run as number 1 TV brand in the world, Interbrand's 7th world's most valuable brand in 2014—and in 2017 alone, it has won over a hundred and twenty awards at the Consumer Electronics Show.

The Samsung Chromebook 3 has a high-quality plastic construction that is sturdy enough to be impact-resistant so that your heart doesn't have to miss a beat when an accident happens. The textured finish and black color add to its classy look. The trackpad is smooth and there is enough space to comfortably rest your wrists on. Its 11.6-inch display has an LED (light emitting diode) screen that gives you bright and clear pictures for a pleasurable movie-viewing experience.

For connectivity, you can do quite a lot with this device; it’s fitted with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports so that you can charge phones and transfer files with speed. It also has an HDMI (full size) port and a slot for microSD cards. What's more, its Bluetooth capability allows for wireless transfer of data between devices so that there really is no limit on the amount of work—whether it's school or business-related—that you can achieve with this baby. On one side of it, you'll also find a microphone/audio jack that’s ready for your enjoyment.

With a 4GB RAM (2GB is also available), a 1.6GHz Intel processor, and HD Graphics, multitasking is a joy as you can open several tabs on your browser, stream videos, and run some apps in the background without this Chromebook batting an eyelid (metaphorical eyelids of course). All of these great features are packed in a lightweight package with a thin 0.7-inch profile—and at a very attractive price too.

Google is a company that is bold, inventive, and which does everything in a fun, unconventional way. It was started in two Stanford University dorm rooms by founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brinn. The goal was to organize all the world's information in one place where it would be accessible to whoever needed it. The company soon outgrew the dorm rooms and a garage, and soon made its home in the Googleplex in California. It's a company with over sixty-thousand employees and has a vast product offering that includes Android, YouTube, and Google Search.

The Google Pixelbook has been touted in many quarters to be the best Chromebook yet, blazing new trails and setting new standards that tomorrow's Chromebooks will follow. When one looks at the Pixelbook, it's quite easy to see what all the fuss is about and why it has generated this kind of hype. Let's take a look for ourselves, starting with its exterior design.

The Pixelbook has a beautifully elegant brushed aluminum unibody chassis with defined edges. It's quite safe to describe this as the thinnest and lightest Chromebook yet, with its 0.4-inch profile and a 2.4-pound weight that makes carrying this baby a pleasure—no fear of cramps or fatigue. Better still, the palm rests are rubberized for a comfortable typing experience. The sweet thing is that with the kind of features it has, being able to fit and carry this device in any decent-sized bag sort of gives one a heady feeling.

Now on those heady-feeling-inducing features. The Pixelbook runs on a 1.2 Gigahertz Dual-Core Intel processor which can be increased to 3.3 Gigahertz in turbo mode. An 8-Gigabyte DDR3 RAM and a 128GB SSD (Solid State Drive) means that you not only get plenty of space to store your documents and media files, but you also get to enjoy a seamless multitasking performance both online and offline.

Here are some more reasons to love the Pixelbook:
  • A rubberized underside to prevent sliding on smooth surfaces
  • A webcam with 720p resolution and a capture rate of 60 frames-per-second for beautiful video call experiences
  • High-tech connectivity with 2 USB-C 3.1 ports for super-fast data transfer
  • A glass trackpad that is classy and responsive
  • A Pixel Pen for more control and added enjoyment
Purchase this device with or without the Pixel Pen, and with 128GB or 256GB.

The Acer Chromebook R 11 is an 11.6-inch beautiful white Chromebook with an aluminum frame. Its clean lines and the diamond patterns on its casing combine to give a sophisticated contemporary look. This means that you can look professional while using it as a laptop, enjoy a movie in a leisurely posture with the tent mode, or get up-close and personal in the tablet mode.

At 2.7 pounds and 0.76 inches, it's quite easy to carry this one anywhere with you and with its long-lasting battery life, you can trust the battery on this Chromebook to last long, more than 9 hours long—that's more than enough time to complete most tasks.

For connectivity, you have one USB 3.0 port and a USB 2.0 port for flash drives, phone charging, and data transfer. There is also an HDMI port and one slot for SD cards so that you'll have flexible data transfer from and to different devices.

Performance-wise, the 1.6 Gigahertz Intel Celeron Quad-core processor coupled with the 4 Gigabyte RAM means fast and hiccup-free operations whether you're browsing with multiple tabs open, streaming videos, playing games, or editing docs. This also means that startup is over in a flash.
