How Do I Choose the Best Cribs Under $200?

When it comes to having a baby, there are so many things to think about, it can be quite overwhelming. Most parents have a standard “things to buy before the baby gets here” list with a stroller, highchair, baby bottes and sterilizer on there. And usually, at the top of the list, is a crib. Most standard cribs however can be pretty pricey and that’s on top of all the other things on the shopping list. Some brands, however, do offer high-quality and functional cribs at a lower price, so we’ve compiled a list of cribs under $200.

Choosing a crib under $200 does not mean you have to skimp on quality or versatility. To give you an idea of what’s out there, check out the Union 3-in-1 Convertible Crib. It can be converted from a crib, to a toddler bed and then to a day bed too, so it can be used for years to come. Even though it’s relatively cheap it still looks modern and sleek.

Although most cribs are your standard stationary ones, there are also some travel cribs out there for a reasonable price. For example, the L.A. Baby Deluxe Folding Metal Crib. This crib has a simple design with wheels that makes it so easy to transport from room to room as you need it. With so many different styles and types of cribs out there, it can be difficult to narrow it down. Check out some more consideration factors below before delving into our reviews.
Price
Buying a crib can be cost-intensive. We understand that not everyone can go for the very expensive models, so we set out to find affordable cribs that are within the budget of more parents. While searching for quality cribs that cost less than $200, we were very careful not to accommodate cheap cribs that will do more harm than good to your baby due to their poor quality.

We found that there are good quality cribs that can be purchased for between $100 and $200, and some of these are what we now present to you. The price of each crib will be determined by features like its size, the quality of material used, its design, etc. This is quality for those on a tight budget.
Features
A parent cannot afford to joke with the quality of the crib they get for their baby. The baby has to be safe and comfortable using whichever crib is chosen. For this reason, there are some important factors to consider, and we will list some of them here for consideration. Some of the important factors to be considered include:
  • Design
  • Material
  • Safety
  • Finishing
  • Adjustability
  • Crib size
  • Ease of assembly and conversion
  • Mattress size
  • Crib location
Now let us deliberate on these.
Construction and Design
Surely the first thing to consider, especially when on a budget, is the type of crib you can afford. There are different types and designs of cribs, with the most popular being the standard crib and the convertible crib. The standard crib is a regular crib with four sides; this design is usually the simplest and will get the job done if it’s well-made.

The second type we will look at is the convertible crib. This is also called a lifetime crib because it can be converted from a standard crib to a toddler bed, day bed, or even a full-sized bed depending on the type of convertible crib it is. These convertible cribs are usually more expensive than the standard cribs for obvious reasons.

As we mentioned, there are other types of cribs including portable cribs (can easily be folded for easy movement), travel cribs (can be packed neatly into a bag for ease of movement, and not very sturdy), eco-friendly cribs (made from eco-friendly materials), multi-purpose cribs (have additional furniture attached), and others. You’ll determine what you need and what you can afford.

Another important thing to consider is the material the crib is made from; most cribs are made of wood. Considering that this is part of what will determine how solid and sturdy the crib will be, it requires due consideration. You also want to consider how safe the materials used are. You don’t want any toxic material around your baby. It’s also for this reason that you will need to consider the kind of finishing that’s used; some cribs always state the toxic materials that they’re tested for and free of. Further, you should be watchful for any and every safety certification that the crib possesses.

Most cribs offer some level of height adjustability. You need to be sure the height adjustability of the mattress support is right for you and your baby. You’ll be lifting your baby into and out of the crib, so it has to be convenient for you too. The more adjustable it is, the better for you.
Performance and Ease of Use
The most important consideration when choosing a baby’s crib is safety. The best cribs to get are those with fixed sides; avoid cribs with movable sides. Though these seem more convenient for parents, as they make it easier to lift and bring out or put in the baby, it has been known to cause infant death. Your safest bet is a crib with stationary sides.

Most cribs have a standard size, which is about 52 inches x 27.8 inches. There may, however, be variations and you need to be very watchful of this for two major reasons. The first is the available space in your home for the crib, and the second is so you can know the right size of mattress to get, especially since many cribs don’t come with mattresses. It would be a shame to get a crib and then, after assembling it, you discover that it cannot fit into the space reserved for it.

Still talking about the location of the crib in your home, it’s important to quickly point out here that, other than the space, you need to ensure the crib isn’t close to any of the following: Open windows, direct sunlight, constant breeze, heater or radiator, curtains, blinds or blind cords, and furniture that can help the baby climb out of the crib.

It’s one thing to order a crib and another to assemble it. You’ll surely want to get a crib that’s easy to assemble. In the same vein, if it’s a convertible crib, you’ll want one that converts easily. On the issue of conversion, look carefully to know if the conversion parts are included. In many cases, these parts are sold separately, so if you’re on a budget and your choice was made based on the crib’s convertibility, be sure that getting the conversion parts won’t make you overshoot your budget range.

Finally, you need your crib to fit into your baby’s room décor. Some cribs offer very limited color options, while some offer a lot of options. Look at the color options available with each crib and determine if any suit your needs.

What is the Best Cribs Under $200?

Having come this far, you already know some major things you need to take into consideration when choosing a crib. With the budget we’re working on already established, you need to know exactly what you want. This could be design, color options, or any other factors. Figure this out and come with us as we review our top five selections. If you don’t know what you want, you won’t know when you’ve found it (but we believe this shouldn’t be a problem if you’ve taken the time to read through our buying guide).
