Alkaline D Cell vs D Rechargeable Battery — How to Choose the Best D-Type Battery for Your Needs

Have you ever imagined what life would be like if there weren’t batteries? We’d probably be unable to move more than a yard away from a socket. You’d have to get up all the time to change the TV channel because your universal remote stopped working – no matter how many times you press the button and wave it around. You’d quickly run out of power sockets to fit your kids’ toys. Batteries are used for many everyday things – more than we realize without really considering it, and that makes them indispensable.

The best D-batteries have large capacities and will power your devices for a long time. What you need batteries for will determine what type is good for you. Matching a need with the right battery type guarantees optimal benefits. These batteries come in different capacities and are suited to certain uses. Some are best suited for digital cameras, while others are good for clocks or flashlights. Most battery brands offer rechargeable versions, too.
What determines the price of D-batteries? Whether they are rechargeable, their capacity and the quantity in a package. Brand can also play a part in the pricing but you should only pay more based upon who makes it IF the quality is better.

Everybody wants the best products with all the features, but the budget is an ever-present reality. A 6-pack rechargeable set with 10000mAh per piece calls for a premium price of around $90.Those that don’t cost that much but will still adequately serve their purpose will cost a little over $10 for a set of 2. It’s important to note the quantity in a package affects the price significantly.

We also found some cheap D-batteries that are obviously pretenders. They don’t hold a charge for long and when in use won’t give you sufficient power. So, don’t waste your resources on such.
D-batteries are mainly used for household and personal purposes. They power quite a number of our small electronic devices. Rechargeable or disposable, they generally have similar features. We have highlighted the important features of D-batteries in the list below:
  • Longevity
  • Number per pack
  • Capacity
  • Shelf-life
  • Reclosable
  • Compatible devices
  • Rechargeable or Disposable
Let these features help you decide what you require from your D-batteries. As you read on, you will have a clearer understanding of how these features affect the batteries.
Construction and Design
The longevity of D-batteries varies according to how much power is stuffed in them and what they are used for, which is the draw power. Some batteries boast of 20000 milliamp-hour at 25 milliamp draw rate, while they will only output 10000 milliamp-hour at 500 milliamp draw rate.

Batteries are broadly categorized into rechargeable and disposable. Rechargeable batteries are expensive in the short run, considering you will also have to buy the charger. However, they save you a lot of money in the long run as you won’t need to buy batteries for a while. D-batteries can be categorized according to their chemistry, which affects the longevity and output of the batteries. Rechargeable batteries can be recharged many times. Some brands boast their D-batteries can be recharged a whopping 1200 times! How’s that for durable.

What you need the battery for largely determines the type you buy. Rechargeable D-batteries come as Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH), Low Self Discharge (LSD NiMH), Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) and Rechargeable Alkaline. Rechargeable D-batteries are powerful, with capacities of 2000-12000 milliamp-hour. If you need batteries for high drain devices like digital cameras, or you find yourself frequently replacing batteries, rechargeable is what you need. The LSD NiMH and rechargeable alkaline types are ideal for low-drain devices e.g remote control, clocks etc.

Disposable batteries, on the other hand, are not as expensive as the rechargeable ones and are readily available. They can also be sorted according to chemistry: Alkaline, High-drain Alkaline, Lithium or Zinc-Carbon. They are usually more powerful, sporting capacities of 8000-18000mAh. Alkaline batteries have the most power in this category and last the longest. High-drain Alkaline and Lithium batteries can be used for high drain devices. But if you consider the frequency at which you will need to change the batteries, the rechargeable options are more economical. Alkaline and Zinc-Carbon are cheap and readily available in most stores. They are best for low-drain devices and will give you the brightest light from your headlamps and flashlights (Kindly note that Lithium batteries in this context are not the same as Lithium-ion batteries).

Brands package their batteries differently. D-batteries are often sold in a pack of 12, while the rechargeable types sometimes come in a 6-pack. There are some brands that present their batteries in re-closable packs. These packs are an ideal way of storing batteries as they protect them from the elements. This ensures a longer shelf life for the batteries.
Performance and Ease of Use
D-batteries are built for performance regardless of the type or chemistry, you just need to know which to use for what. All disposable D-batteries have long shelf-life (they hold a charge for a long time when not in use). Only the LSD NiMH has a comparable shelf-life among the rechargeable ones.

Battery leakages are not good for any device because if the leakage sips into the device, it might damage it. Rechargeable Alkaline is the only type of the rechargeable batteries that is prone to leakage while Lithium is the only culprit in the disposable category. Cold temperatures usually separate boys from men; it also applies to D-batteries. All rechargeable batteries work well up to -4oF, except the Rechargeable Alkaline. Only the Lithium steps up to the plate among the disposable ones in cold temperatures.

Whether your D-battery is rechargeable or disposable, it is sadly going to die someday. With the exception of Rechargeable Alkaline, there are many locations you can take your dead batteries to for recycling in the US. Disposable batteries too are recyclable, including rechargeable alkaline, but there are extremely few locations you can take them to for recycling. I guess that’s why disposable batteries still fill our landfills. It is our hope what you’ve learned about batteries will help you make up your mind on what you expect from your D-batteries and which you choose.
