How Do I Choose the Best Dell Desktop?

We know that some people just want a reliable computer, while others are looking for the whole enchilada, including a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. We kept that in mind with our review, which runs the gamut from micro PCs to servers, and a few all-in-one PCs. Dell also has many desktops built for gaming; many people don't know that Alienware is part of the Dell family. And lest we forget, Dell makes some great quality laptops as well, in case you want to check those out while you are browsing.
If you want to save some money and buy a cheap Dell computer, you can get one for as little as a couple of hundred dollars. However, the total memory will probably be low at around 2GB, so it won’t perform very well. A reasonable deal on the low end for a computer that can handle multitasking is usually in the $300-$600 range.

You can select an Intel Core desktop computer ranging from 8 GB up to 64 GB, but you'll have to spend more money every time you go up the gigabyte ladder.

If the sky is the limit in price, you may want to purchase a Dell computer that packs a memory punch with 32-64 gigabytes of RAM. These models sell for around $1200-$2000+, depending on the upgrades and accessories you include. Unfortunately, most of us don’t have an endless budget. If your purse strings are tight but you want an excellent computer, we are happy to say that Dell has many affordable options in the $600-$1200 range that perform very well.
Pay close attention to what you get with the purchase of your Dell Desktop, as it is important that it meets your needs. Are you just looking for a computer, or do you want an all-in-one PC that comes with a screen, keyboard, and mouse?

Many PCs don’t include a CD/DVD slot these days, so if you want one, be sure it’s included in the package. Here are some other important features to look for:
  • Total RAM
  • Number of USB ports
  • USB port size (2.0, 3.0)
  • Memory speed
  • Hard drive storage capacity
  • Processing speed
  • Graphics quality
  • Multi-card reader
  • Bluetooth/Wifi ready
  • Dimensions and color
So what do all these stats mean, and how are they represented by the manufacturer? Following is the lowdown on what statistics affect the performance of your computer the most.
Construction and Design
Since technology companies are upgrading with lightning speed, it’s important to have a basic understanding of whether you should get the latest model in a computer line. Usually the newer models have more RAM, faster processing speeds, and improved graphics.

One of the most important stats to consider when shopping for computers is the RAM, or Random Access Memory, which is the “working” memory of your computer. It affects the computer's operating speed, multitasking ability, and price.

You may purchase a computer with as little as 2GB of RAM. Mid-range RAM is 8-16GB, and high-capacity computers offer 32-64GB. As total RAM has a significant effect on the performance of your system, you may want to increase RAM over time, or just get more RAM up front.

Each system has a limit to the total RAM you can increase to, so be sure to check that stat if you’re looking to max out at 32 or 64GB. You can purchase additional RAM cards separately, and either replace the old RAM cards or add additional RAM if there are empty slots available. However, not all computers offer increased RAM.

The central processing unit (CPU) is what translates and executes commands inside the computer. The number of core processing units tends to multiply with the newer versions, going from single to dual cores, then quad cores. Speed and efficiency are important, and these are indicated by GHz, or billions of pulses per second. The higher the GHz number, the faster the processing speed.

Hard drive storage is another factor. This is the warehouse of memory for your computer. It can be measured in ascending order as megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), or terabytes (TB), with terabytes being the highest. For example, a 500GB hard drive has about half the capacity of a 1TB hard drive.

Other factors in construction include tool-less entry in some designs for easy upgrading, a variety of slots for different types of cables, cards, and plug-ins, and the pixel density of your monitor.

To qualify as a High Definition (HD) monitor, the density should be 1920 x 1080 pixels. Regardless of the size, this is the standard pixelation of an HD screen, so larger screens will not be as crisp in standard HD. 4-5K screens can be quite expensive, but they allow great image quality on larger screens with 3840 x 2160 pixels or more.
Performance and Ease of Use
For the best performance of your computer, splurge for additional RAM, or save up for a future upgrade and buy a model that will allow you to increase to 32 or 64GB of RAM.

If you want to share applications and create a computer networking system that will allow multiple computers to communicate efficiently without slowing down any one personal computer, you may be in the market for a server. For those who crave the action of playing computer games, gaming computers are the way to go, as they are specifically designed to highlight the action with lights, sounds, and VR (virtual reality) technology.

And, hey, you can never be too careful, right? If you want a computer with total recall that will take you into the future of technology, you can buy one that is enhanced with biometrics such as fingerprint, facial, and retina recognition. Pretty cool—eh?

Now let’s look at a variety of the most popular Dell desktop computers on the market.
