Now, how exactly do French presses work? Simple! They use a technique referred to as the immersion brewing technique. So what happens is, you put your grounds in, add some water and leave them there to sit. The plunger in the device will then push the coffee down to the bottom of the pot and hold it there. Voila! One thing you must avoid doing, though, is leaving your coffee to sit that way over a long period. Why? As the temperature of the water drops, the grounds can release some chemicals that are not toxic, but will make your brew turn bitter. This way, you can decant your coffee into your cup and still have it warm when you drink.
