How Do I Choose the Best Hardside Luggage?

So, what do you need to consider when buying luggage? Actually, you don’t have to make all that many considerations, but the things you do have to consider are of great importance. In fact, it all boils down to two considerations: size and durability. Familiarizing yourself with these two considerations will always tell you which case is good and which one is not.

Also, these considerations are multi-layered, and there are many things you have to look for within these two elements. The size of your case may be subject to certain airport regulations, meaning if they’re over the certain weight, you have to pay extra or you can’t take it with you aboard a plane, but have to give it over for them to store it in the plane’s cargo area. You should save that spot for your suitcase.

On the other hand, if you do actually want to take your case onto the plane with you, then your best bet is to get a carry-on luggage. Carry-on cases are smaller and can fit less stuff inside, but you’ll be able to take the case with you and put it in the compartment above your seat. They’re also typically more convenient for traveling compared to backpacks. Everything larger than a carry-on, and you’ll have to take it to a conveyor belt. Usually, airlines allow carry-ons to have sizes of 22’’ x 14’’ x 9’’. Some airlines allow bigger carry-ons, but that’s about the standard size for all carry-ons.
Hardside cases aren’t that expensive, but they can be. Usually, the prices range from $30 – $40 to about $130. These are standard cases, with all the standard features. However, if you want a case made of the highest-end materials and from the most prominent brands, you’ll be looking at prices that exceed $250. Also, the cost will, undoubtedly, go up if you’re buying a set instead of a single case. On the other hand, prominent brands have commercial-grade lines that are more available to the average Joe.

All of this said, try to stay away from cheap hardside luggage options—resist the temptation to buy them for their attractive-looking price tag, because these are certainly not attractive (or effective) luggage. Spend a little more to get a way better hardside luggage—trust us on this.
Aside from the standard features you find on all the hardside cases, you have some additional thingies that make your case special. Often, hardside cases feature bezels, usually on the side. Cases usually have an expanding interior, allowing you to put more things in it, as well. Other things to watch out for are zippered dividers and luggage straps—you won’t want to be without these. Lastly, most cases feature a TSA lock that clamps down on the zippers, disallowing anyone from going through your stuff without your permission.

To sum up all the features, here is a short list:
  • Bezels
  • Expandable Interior
  • Zippered Dividers
  • Luggage Straps
  • TSA Locks
Construction and Design
Now, when it comes to durability, there are many small things to consider. The first and foremost thing is the material. You need to check how strong the material is, but, also, how flexible it is. If the material flexes, it allows it to bend under pressure and return to its original shape, saving you the pain of watching your favorite case looking like a cereal bowl. The strength of the material will allow the case to take much more punishment, and not crack. Further, look for cases that don’t have smooth, but slightly rougher, surfaces. Such cases are going to be less prone to scratches. A scratch is a minor inconvenience, but, later on, those scratches can become very deep and start developing into cracks.

Hardside cases are usually made from one of two materials: polycarbonate and ABS plastic. Both types are very resilient to damage caused by banding, being thrown, or being pressed on. The cases usually feature a rectangular design, with round corners, and feature slightly convex faces. Convex faces distribute the pressure applied to them, preventing caving in and excessive bending. The cases are also made to flex a little bit, as it allows them to withstand the weight of other cases being piled on top of them.

Next, check the zipper. Many less-prominent brands skimp on zippers, which is particularly bad. Zippers are the weakest link in any case, and they fail most often. And when they do, all hell breaks loose, and quite literally. A zipper failing means that you can, pretty much, toss the case into the trash. When you’re looking at the zippers, look for YKK zippers, as they’re absolutely the highest quality on the market.

Further, look at the case’s wheels. Hardside cases usually come with four wheels attached. Wheels failing is also a bad thing, especially on cases with only two wheels. Even with hardsides, wheels failing is a big deal, and it will render the product nearly unusable.

And, lastly, check the handle. Telescopic handles are a standard on all cases, and they’re absolutely vital for large cases, or else you won't be able to move around. A handle shouldn't move at all in its sockets and should operate smoothly. A handle breaking will also make the case unusable, as carrying a 70-pound case through the city is a formidable task for anyone.
Performance and Ease of Use
It’s a suitcase. You open it, you put stuff in it (hopefully in an orderly fashion), and you zip it up. You extend the handle, and you pull. As simple as that. Treat them well, and you have little to worry about.

Performance-wise, the cases aren't very fun. They just sit there, staring at you blankly, not saying a word. You can sit on ‘em, but they aren't going to complain, so they've got that going for them. But they're completely catatonic otherwise. If they hold your stuff safely, that’s more than you can ask for.

Next in line is a hardside luggage set from Merax. Merax may not have a 100-year-long history, but it’s innovative and smart enough to know what customers want, and how to make excellent products. The company was founded in 1995, in LA, and produces a wide variety of things for your office, home, pets, and kids. It even produces fitness machines and gear.

Coming back to its Travelhouse Luggage Set, it's a very solid investment. The set contains three hard-cases, which is awesome, as it allows you to be prepared for any situation. If you don't want to carry too much stuff, you take the smallest of the cases. If you're going away for a weekend, the middle one will do. If you're going on a holiday, the biggest one will cater to your needs. And the best thing—they fit one inside the other for easy storage.

When talking about the products’ construction, all three cases are made of lightweight but durable ABS plastics. The handle—retractable of course—is made from lightweight but sturdy aluminum. All three cases feature a combination lock and four multi-directional wheels, as well as TSA locks. The cases’ weights are 6, 8, and 10 pounds, respectively.

Here are the cases’ features:
  • TSA Locks
  • Cases Fit into Each Other
  • ABS Plastic Construction
  • Aluminum Telescopic Handle
  • Four Multi-directional Wheels
  • 2-year Warranty
All in all, there is hardly a better and more affordable set. The cases are well-built, and feature a stylish and modern design to suit your needs. Did we mention that you can choose from multiple colors? That’s right! We also like the addition of TSA locks.

Kenneth Cole Hardside Luggage 5705047 – Cobalt Blue

From 1995, we move further back to 1982, when a man with a plan would not be denied from starting his own fashion line. Kenneth Cole found out that he wouldn’t be able to afford to rent a room in the Hilton Hotel in New York and showcase his shoes. He then rented a truck and asked to park two blocks away, but was denied, due to only film productions being able to do that. So, Kenneth Cole renamed his company from Kenneth Cole Inc. to Kenneth Cole Productions and was granted permit. He sold 40,000 pairs of shoes in two and a half days.

Now, we know what you're thinking—how can I afford anything from such a prestigious fashion line? Well, not to worry, because the Reaction Out of Bounds Suitcase we're presenting comes from an extremely affordable line within Kenneth Cole, called Kenneth Cole Reaction. This stylish blue hardside is made of ABS, ensuring that it's on the money in terms of durability. The case also has molded plastic corners to ensure it can withstand rougher treatment from terminal staff.

The product naturally features a telescopic handle, made of aluminum, and a very convenient U-shaped zipper pocket. The case flexes much like the Winfield2, further increasing the product’s resilience. Four wheels are, of course, a standard, and the case features bezels that allow it to be placed on the side if that’s convenient for you. Overall, the product is very spacious and features a strap for the clothes as well, not to multiple color choises.

Here are the case’s features:
  • Quite Affordable
  • ABS Plastic Construction
  • U-shaped Pocket on the Inside
  • Four Wheels
  • Side Bezels
  • Telescopic Handle
  • Molded Plastic Corners
  • Luggage Straps
  • Flexible
All in all, if you’re after a sturdy but affordable case, then Kenneth Cole is the one to go for. It’s well-built, and has a good degree of flexibility, allowing for a greater service life.

Delsey Hardside Luggage 07649PL – Cobalt Blue

One of the most prominent brands that specializes in creating luggage is Delsey Paris. This French company was founded in 1946; as of 2010, it’s the second biggest luggage and luggage accessory brand worldwide, right after the famed Samsonite. The company was founded by Emile Delahaye of Etablissments Delahaye and Seynhaeve brothers. Emile had experience making cases for typewriters and cameras, and he used that knowledge of molded plastic to create the suitcases and hardsides you enjoy today.

Talking about the Delsey Expandable Spinner Trolley, it is an excellent product, made of 100% polycarbonate, and very light despite its size. The material is treated to be resilient to cracks and features a nice metallic finish, as well. The case is outfitted with four wheels that rotate 360 degrees, and are very silent too, so you won’t announce your coming to the security officer and all other passengers at the baggage check.

This case also features an expandable main compartment, allowing you to store more stuff inside. And let’s not forget its luggage straps on the inside, or its zippered divider. That, along with TSA locks, ensure your stuff is safe from any prying eyes and curious hands looking to get into them. Lastly, the case features a very light but very strong telescopic aluminum handle as well as multiple colors.

Here are the product’s features:
  • 100% Polycarbonate
  • The Material Flexes
  • Four Very Quiet Wheels
  • Zippered Divider
  • TSA Lock
  • Telescopic Aluminum Handle
  • Luggage Strap
In the end, what else can you expect from a prominent brand such as Delsey than pure perfection? The luggage is really tough but flexible, and the expanding interior makes it very useful for people who like to travel carrying a lot of stuff.
