How Do I Choose the Best Keyboard Stand?

Keyboards are very sensitive electronic equipment. Whether you’re jamming on stage, laying down some lines in the studio or simply practicing at home, one thing you don’t want is your keyboard suddenly tumbling over. Having this happen on stage can be very embarrassing, not to mention the disruption it causes to a performance.

Aside from the embarrassment of having this happen on stage, consider the possible damage to your dear equipment wherever it happens. Imagine you had put on your headphones and was practicing some tricky scale runs, or maybe you were writing a song and suddenly, all the flow of inspiration and excitement flies right out the window as you find yourself struggling to catch your keyboard as its clearly inadequate stand crumbles – not good.

Many times we succeed in saving the keyboard from a potentially catastrophic fall. However, there are sometimes casualties. One situation we’ve encountered a lot is having the jack end of the audio cable breaking into the input or headphone input sockets while the keyboard was being “saved”. This will now require some technical surgery which will of course cost some money.

All this can be avoided with the right keyboard stand which we’ll show you how to choose. You just need to consider a few factors like size, weight, design, and so forth to help you make the right choice. In this guide we’ll show you through the process so that, just as you protect your camera with a camera bag, you’ll also begin to provide your keyboard with the right support it needs.
Price
The kind of keyboard stand you’ll buy will likely depend on your budget. If you have no definite budget and you’re ready to buy what you need, then what you’ll pay will of course be determined by the features of the keyboard stand you choose.

From our research, we found that you have a wide price range to work with when choosing a keyboard stand. We found that for from about $17 to $230, you can get a good keyboard stand. Remember that the term “good” here is relative to the use you want to put the keyboard stand to.

Having said the above, we can assure you that all the products we’ve reviewed are good quality products and will deliver value for what you pay for them. These are not cheap keyboard stands that’ll amount to a total waste of money. Take some time to look through the features and whichever has the features you want will give you the value promised.
Features
There are a few major things to consider when choosing a keyboard stand especially given that this is purely a mechanical equipment without any electronic functions or parts. These few features will help you pick which stand is best for you. These are some features to look out for:
  • Design – Single X, Double X, Table etc.
  • Adjustability
  • Material
  • Weight capacity
  • Securing options
Let’s look at these…
Construction and Design
The design of a keyboard stand is a critical part of assessing its ability to support the weight of your keyboard. One of the most balanced of designs is the table-top or platform design which can support a lot of weight. In addition to its ability to support considerable weight, it also has enough clearance for the legs when a player is playing seated.

The double X design can also support considerable weight depending on the strength of the tubing. This design is less complicated, easy to setup and fold up after use. However, it doesn’t have enough clearance for the legs when a player is playing seated.

The single X design is easily the least supportive and is best suited for smaller keyboards. It’s simple in design, usually lightweight and easy to setup and fold up. Bear in mind, however, that this style doesn’t have enough clearance for the legs when playing seated.

There are other designs such as the spider design, which is a stand with outstretched arms to hold the keyboards. These stands are found a lot on major stages where they support some of the heaviest keyboards available today. This is one of the most supportive of designs and also one of the more expensive. They are usually bulky, heavy, can hold multiple keyboards and take up some space, making them best for large stages and tours.

Since one of the biggest issues with keyboard stands is their ability to support the weight of the keyboard. Aside from the design of the stand, another important factor to consider is the material that the stand is made of. Most stands are made with steel tubing. You can however find some table stands made with wood. When assessing stands made with steel tubes, consider the thickness of the tube. It could be 1 inch or 2 inches or even bigger. Obviously, a 2 inch steel tube will be stronger than a 1 inch one.

Some keyboardists like to stand when they play while others like to sit. Whichever you prefer, you should be able to get a stand that adjusts appropriately. Most, if not all, keyboard stands are height adjustable, so just ensure the range suits your height needs.

When you’ve placed your keyboard on the stand, some stands provide additional securing options. It could be screws that screw into a screw hole prepared for this under the keyboard or it could be a latch that latches onto the keyboard to secure it. For either of these to work, the positioning of the screw holes has to match that of the stand’s screws. Knowing that this may not always be possible, most X design stands have non-slip rubber end caps which serve to provide some traction that prevents the keyboard from sliding. It also serves to protect the keyboard from getting scratched on the metal stand.

Whatever you do, make sure you never forget to check the weight capacity of the stand you’re considering. Learn what your keyboard weighs and then find out the weight capacity of the stand. This is one of the surest ways of ensuring you get a stand can that really support your keyboard. To be on the safe side, it’s best not to cut too close to the weight capacity limit.
Performance and Ease of Use
Depending on your application, how easy it is to adjust the height of your keyboard stand can be important. The ability to quickly raise or lower the keyboard on stage during a performance is usually very important. You don’t want the audience waiting forever while you crank up or lower the stand. The easier, the better.

If you’re a performer who loves to sit while playing, understand the issue with X design stands. They don’t have enough clearance for the legs. This doesn’t mean you can’t work with them; it only means you’ll have to adjust your knees downward to avoid having them hitting the X intersection of the stand.

If you need a stand that can hold multiple keyboards and you don’t want to spend so much getting the spider-design stands, you can get a double X stand and then get a 2nd tier stand adaptor. This will connect to your stand and give you space for an additional keyboard.
