Guide to Choosing the Best Natural Lawn Fertilizer

A gorgeous lawn and healthy lawn adds the final touches to that picture perfect home and makes it complete. Like anything worth having, a gorgeous lawn is no easy task. You’ve got to ensure it’s watered properly, trimmed and maintains that gorgeous green tone.

If you’re just starting your lawn or having it redone then the grass seeds are the foundation for what’s to be the envy of your neighbors. Then you start to water it and fertilize it until you see the blades of grass rise up from the earth to feel the warmth of the sun and you nurture it until there’s no more dirt but a bed of green beauty.

If your front and back yard is already filled with grass but it’s looking brown, patchy and lifeless then you need to revitalize it. You can do so by hand, but if your yard is big, and the bag of fertilizer even bigger, then it’d be wise to use a lawn cart and save yourself a lot of energy. Soon you’ll see your lawn change before your eyes into something you thought you could only see either on TV or at your rich neighbor’s house.

Whether you’re just starting the lawn of your dreams or bringing one back to life, you need one thing and that’s fertilizer. There are loads of fertilizers on the market. However, you don’t have to worry about making the wrong purchase or getting one that doesn’t work once you know what you want.

We’ve put together a lawn fertilizer buying guide to teach you everything you need to know about getting the right lawn fertilizer for your yard. You’ll learn the benefits of organic fertilizer versus synthetic, what those three numbers on the front of your fertilizer’s bag means and everything else so that when you’re done, you’ll make the right choice the first time.

Honorable Mentions

Before we move on to the rest of this buying guide, we wanted to take a moment to mention a few other quality lawn fertilizers. Trust us, narrowing things down to 5 isn’t always easy!
*Miracle-Gro is not a truly organic product, but it’s non-burning formula is safe for all grasses.

One more quick important thing to note. When the word “organic” is used with things like fertilizers, it is NOT the same as when applied to foods. For things we eat, there are very strict guidelines. For garden and lawn products, the term refers to the source of the components. For example, are they natural and even if they are, how much processing was involved?

Even though the terms mean different things, there is a connection between the two. In order for a food item to be given the true organic label, it must be grown using organic gardening processes and products.
The price of lawn fertilizers vary due to the size of the fertilizer, type of fertilizer, and its N-P-K ratio — amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the fertilizer. The price range of a lawn fertilizer is between $30 and $350.

We know, it’s a huge gap, but that’s because there are so many factors to take into consideration. The sizes of fertilizers vary quite a bit and the type of fertilizer has an effect its price as well with organic fertilizers being more expensive than synthetic ones. Liquid fertilizers are also more expensive than solid ones and there’s the N-P-K ratio which differs as well.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t get a great lawn fertilizer for a good price. On the contrary, there are many great affordable lawn fertilizers on the market. You just need to know what you want before making a purchase. It’s also advisable to stay clear of cheap lawn fertilizers because they can damage your grass and set you straight back to square, costing you more in the long run.
The features of lawn fertilizers are primarily the ingredients, three of which are essential to the fertilizer’s performance, these are nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. When you see the three numbers on a fertilizer’s package such as 10-10-10 it refers to the percentage of the element found in that package of fertilizer. This is the N-P-K ratio as each letter is the chemical notation of its respective element.

Now each ingredient serves a different purpose and are available in different concentrations in different packages of fertilizers.

Nitrogen — This ingredient is responsible for making your plants green and causes the growth of its leaves and stems.

Phosphorus — This one assists in the blooming of your flowers and plants as well as the growth of fruits and roots as well.

Potassium — Potassium strengthens your plants, making them resilient and allows them to brave the cold weather.

Do keep in mind that different plants require different nutrient levels. For this reason, we have a separate review for organic fertilizers for vegetables and flowers (some of which are actually all-purpose).
Construction and Design
Fertilizers come in many different forms and the form of the fertilizer affects its performance and ultimately your lawn.

Liquid — This type of fertilizer comes in a concentrated liquid form. It mixes with water for easily application and provides the nutrients immediately to your lawn. The drawback is that it’s not long term and quite expensive to start with as you have to apply it more frequently than other types of fertilizer.

Granular turf — This kind is the most popular type of fertilizer. This is because it’s easy to use and provides long lasting benefits to your lawn. Granular turf fertilizers are available in slow-release as well as fast-release formulas.

Organic —This lawn fertilizer is made from natural ingredients and the bi-products from once living organisms such as fish emulsion. Other common ingredients include blood meal, alfalfa, cottonseed and more. Most organic fertilizers are slow acting but provide long-term benefits.

Synthetic/chemical — Chemically manufactured, this type of fertilizer provides an immediate release of nutrients by quickly penetrating the soil, making for quick results. Synthetic fertilizers tend to come in solid form but the type varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Synthetic vs Organic Fertilizer for Lawns

Performance and Ease of Use
Fertilizers come in different forms, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.

The N-P-K ratio of each package of fertilizer determines the percentage of each element in the package. When you’re purchasing your fertilizer, it’s also important to make note of the weight as it’ll tell you how much of each element is present in your lawn fertilizer.

For example, a 50 pound bag of fertilizer with the N-P-K ratio 12-1-6 means that there’s 12% nitrogen, 1% phosphorus, and 6% potassium in this bag of fertilizer. This also means that there’s 6 pounds of nitrogen, 0.5 pound of phosphorus and 3 pounds of potassium.

To provide you with another example, a 25-pound bag of fertilizer with the same ratio would give you 3 pounds of nitrogen, 0.25 pound of phosphorus and 1.5 pounds of potassium. Ultimately, the ratio you choose is dependent on the state of your grass, the stage of your lawn and finally the current season.

Fertilizers that are higher in potassium are also known as ‘Winterizers.’ The high levels of potassium help your lawn brave the cold winter. It also strengthens your lawn so it can fight against disease and handle other types of stress. Lawn fertilizers that are higher in phosphorus are known as starter fertilizers as they help new lawns to develop strong roots.

You may come across many fertilizers without any phosphorus, and you may be happy to learn that this is due to companies and consumers alike becoming more environmentally-conscious. This is because phosphorus runoff can pollute different bodies of water if it isn’t used properly. This is another reason why it’s vital to always follow the instructions on each package of fertilizer.

One thing you’ll notice is that many fertilizers have nitrogen as the highest element out of the three. This is because nitrogen is essential to your lawn and plants surviving the winter as well along with the heat. It also helps your lawn deal with the soil if it’s too wet.

Lawn fertilizers are either fast-release or slow-release. Each has its different advantages and disadvantages.

Fast-release fertilizer — This fertilizer is also known as water-soluble nitrogen (WSN) fertilizer and supplies your lawn and plants with nitrogen quickly. It’s typically inexpensive and works even with cold soil; however, it doesn’t last as long as a slow-release fertilizer and requires you to use more over time. While it quickly greens your lawn/plants, it can cause growth that’s too fast and even burn your grass. Plus, it suffers losses through the air or soil.

Slow-release fertilizer — This type of fertilizer is also known as water-insoluble nitrogen (WIN) and takes a longer time to work on your soil but requires you to use less in the long run as it provides longer lasting benefits for your lawn. It also won’t burn your grass or suffer any loss through the air or soil. Slow-release fertilizers, however, are more expensive and don’t work well with cold soil.

Lawn fertilizers also come with weed killing agents that are used to control and prevent the growth of weeds. Ultimately, the type of fertilizer you choose depends on your budget, lawn and the season. Your lawn deserves the right treatment and we know this guide will help you to give your lawn just that.

Organic Lawn Fertilizer FAQs

What is the best lawn fertilizer schedule?
Ideally, applying lawn food follows the seasons because every grass type needs nitrogen for healthy growth. For consistent and healthy growth, follow an even application schedule. Ensure that the lawn fertilizer that you feed is ideal for that season.
When do I apply lawn fertilizer?
It’s usually best to apply your lawn fertilizer at the start of the season. Time the application to the period before the grass reaches its peak growth. If you live in a warm area, you can apply the fertilizer at the end of spring or during early spring.

It is also important to read the instructions to determine whether the fertilizer you are using must be used on dry grass. Most will also recommend mowing the lawn prior to application as well.
What is the best lawn fertilizer?
Since most of the lawns have turf grass, it’s best to go for lawn food with the right macronutrients for such grass. Lawn fertilizers usually have Nitrogen (N), Phosphate (P) and Potassium (K) or NPK as it’s commonly known. Depending on nitrate deficiency on your grass, go for the right Nitrogen percentage to replenish the lost nutrients. In addition to fertilizers made especially for lawns, there are also organic all purpose fertilizers that can be used in gardens too.
How to apply lawn fertilizer
The two common methods of applying granular lawn fertilizer is using the hand or a spreader. Using the hand may result in burning portions of the grass since the fertilizer may get concentrated on a particular area. Using a spreader ensures even distribution of the fertilizer. For liquid fertilizers, you will want to use a backpack sprayer, to simplify the process.
What does lawn fertilizer do?
Regularly feeding your lawn with fertilizer ensures the healthy growth of grass and a lush looking lawn all year round. Just like our bodies need nutrients for good growth, so does your lawn. Lawn fertilizer provides your grass with the necessary nutrients for healthy growth.
