How Do I Choose the Best Lawn Mower?

There are several devices which shouldn’t be missed from a modern man's garage (or woman's, for that matter), especially if you have a large yard. For example, almost every homeowner gets a good quality lawn mower so that the turf in front of his house looks attractive all the times. In a similar fashion, other people might also need a portable air compressor or a gas chainsaw for different outdoor activities around the house. If you need help when shopping for such tools, you have come to the right place as we always provide meaningful pieces of advice, including an in-depth review on what type of lawn mower might be more suitable for you.

For example, while you can get cheap lawnmowers for between $50 and $100, this is one product where it’s worth paying a little bit more a better model – but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank! Yes, there are high end and commercial lawn mowers that can cost over $1,000, but for the purpose of our review, we only looked at models that were more affordable for the average consumer and kept the price tag under $500!

When you pay a little bit more for a lawn mower, you are not only going to get a product that is of better quality construction, but you are also going to get one that produces great results. You can also get lawn mowers that do more than just cut your grass. No matter how much you spend, there are some important factors to consider when looking for the best lawnmower.

By the way, when it came to choosing just 5 brands, to be honest, we struggled a bit because we did come across some really good ones. With that being said, the we'd like to give a shout out and honorable mention to Worx which has some nice mowers and yard equipment, including a robotic lawn mower!
When it comes to buying a lawn mower, most home owners aren’t just looking for one that is affordable. It is important that it be dependable, efficient, and easy to operate. For a quality mower, you can expect to pay somewhere in the range of $175 to $500. Don't just look at the cost, consider the value that you are getting for your money – which means carefully considering the features it has. To save money, you don’t want to get one with more than you need, but you also want to make sure that it’s one that’s not going to break down on you.
While there are many features that are standard for lawn mowers, some models go above and beyond – adding some nice extras. Ultimately it’s all about determining whether the features that a particular mower offers you good value for the money that you are going to spend. For example, some of these features include adjustable cutting heights and many other interesting options.
Construction and Design
One of the first things you are going to have to decide on when it comes to which is the best mower for your needs is what type of power it uses. There are gas lawn mowers, electric mowers (both corded and cordless) and of course you could go with a good ol’ fashioned manual mower (yes, we even found one of those worth recommending). You also want to determine how much energy you personally want to exert – this means choosing between a push mower or a self-propelled walk-behind lawn mower.

In terms of how the mower actually cuts the grass, you can choose either a rotary or cylinder blade. Then there’s how the mower deals with the actual grass clippings. Some mowers only offer a single option, but others come with a 3-in-1 feature, which lets you choose between side ejection, a rear collection bag ,or mulching the clippings right in to the ground.

Lawn mowers also vary in the cutting width. While in theory, machines with wider cut ranges make for a quicker mowing job, in reality most people find this doesn’t make a significant difference in the amount of time takes to get the job done. But if this is important to you, you may want to take a look at a mower with a 21” width. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if you have a yard with a lot of narrow spaces, then you may find that a mower with a 17” width for easier maneuvering.

Finally, it goes without saying that a quality lawn mower will have a good solid construction – made with materials that are built to last.
Performance and Ease of Use
If all you have is a small piece of yard that is relatively flat – just about any lawn mower will do. Hey, if it is super small, and a nice sunny day, you could use a manual mower and get a nice tan and work out while you’re mowing. But most people are looking for a lawn mower that can do more than just cut a small patch of grass.

Good quality lawn mowers will be able to handle a variety of terrains as well as different types of vegetation – meaning it will cut through even the toughest of grass and weeds. They will also be able to handle the task of cutting grass that isn’t totally dry without clogging and getting jammed. Many of the better lawn mowers also give you different options for the length to which it cuts your grass.

Another important thing to consider is how easy a lawn mower is to operate and maintain. For example, a gas mower will take more routine maintenance than an electric one, but you can typically cover more area. As for electric models (which in general require less work) -- corded ones “go forever” as long as you can keep it plugged in and cordless ones will go for as long as the battery can keep a charge. How quickly or easily a lawn mower starts also helps to increase efficiency.

Finally, you will want to take a look at how easy a mower is to operate – as in how much real work you will have to do. A high quality self-propelled mower takes minimal effort on your part. All you have to do is get it started, walk behind it and steer (but not all walk-behind mowers “propel themselves” equally). The actual design of the machine will also impact your comfort level while working in your yard.

Our Top Choice
The Black & Decker SPCM1936 is a cordless, self-propelled mower that can hold its charge long enough to mow up to 1/3 of an acre at time. Because this is a discontinued model (or if you have a larger yard) you may want to get a second battery to keep charged and ready to swap out!
Black & Decker 19-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Self-Propelled Lawn Mower with Removable Battery

Black & Decker SPCM1936 Lawn Mower

The self-propelling feature of the Black & Decker SPCM1936 makes yard work a breeze – just set the mower speed and you are off! With a reduced price of about $330 on Amazon at the moment of this writing, the Black & Decker Self-Propelled Cordless Mower gives you the best of both worlds when it comes to mowing your yard – the freedom of a gas mower with the convenience of an electric mower. It is simple to start, has not cord to tie you to a power source and requires no gas, oil or tune-ups. And because its self-propelling technology, it’s much easier to use than a standard push mower.

When we did our research, the Black & Decker SPCM1936 19” lawn mower had an overall Amazon rating of 4.1 stars, with 80% of the 765 reviewers giving it either 4 or 5 stars. Among the critical reviews, a common piece of feedback is that the height adjustment is a little confusing to figure out (yet at the same time, other reviewers say that it’s easy). There are also some complaints about product defects or the mower not working properly but since Black and Decker is such a well known brand, these are likely to be isolated incidents.
Construction and Design
Black and Decker is a brand that has a reputation for putting out great mowers, and the Black & Decker Cordless Electric Lawn Mower is no exception. Even though this is a model that has been discontinued by the manufacturer, it has a lot of great features that make it worthy of being on our short list – not to mention the fact that you can save about $170 off the original price!

Black & Decker SPCM1936 is a self propelled, walk-behind lawn mower which means less work for you when it comes to pushing. With this lawn mower, you can adjust the mowing speed to your desired pace. And the electric power source means less maintenance and a one touch start (no pulling or cranking required).

Another benefit of using electric is that it reduces your carbon footprint in the environment because there are zero emissions. The 36 volt battery is removable and can be recharged on the machine or off with the use of a charger. A fully charged battery will last long enough to mow up to a 1/3 of an acre at a time (under ideal conditions). It takes 12 hours to fully charge the battery, but after 4 hours you will have a 60% charge – enough time to take a lunch break and get back to finishing the last bit of work to do. If you are someone who likes to get more done in a single time period, you can purchase an additional battery so there is always one charged up and ready to go.

The Black & Decker Cordless Electric Mower is not as heavy as the WORX PaceSetter, weighing only 90 pounds. The outer deck is made of lightweight and durable polymer that is easy to clean and never rusts – plus it comes with a lifetime warranty just in case. This machine has a 19 inch cutting path and you can adjust the cutting heights.

Users can select one of three methods to handle grass clipping with a push of a button. With the 3-in-1 feature you can use the rear collection bag, mulch the clippings or go with the rear discharge option.
Performance and Ease of Use
While some other self propelled lawn mowers have shortcomings in terms of speed – either moving to slow or too fast for people – Black and Decker has done a great job addressing this issue. Because it has good power and adjustable speeds, it really does alow you to mow at your own speed without any “jerky” motions or waiting for the machine to catch up with you. It comes with a soft grip handle to make mowing the lawn even more comfortable for your hands.

The 36V battery that drives the engine of this lawn mower is powerful enough to handle tough vegetation and allows you to choose the grass height that meets your desired preference for a perfectly manicured yard (from 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches).

Storage is also convenient with the Black & Decker Self-Propelled Mower. The handle folds down when not in use, plus since there is gas tank, you can actually store it on its side so it takes up even less floor space.

When you get the Black & Decker SPCM1936 you get the added convenience of an easy to start motor. As a safety measure, you need to use the key that is provided. Once inserted you simply pull the handle and start mowing. There is also the extra benefit of not having to deal with gas, oil and tune ups! Oh, and it runs much, much quieter than a gas engine lawn mower so you don’t have to worry about waking up the neighbors if you want to get an early morning start.

This corded electric 3-in-1 lawn mower by GreenWorks has three options for grass clippings – rear bagging, side discharge and mulching. Greenworks also makes some great cordless electric mowers.
GreenWorks 12 Amp Corded Lawn Mower with Side Discharge Chute, Rear Discharge Bag & Mulch Plug

GreenWorks 25022 Lawn Mower - 20-Inch

The GreenWorks Push Mower has a 12 Amp motor that is powerful enough to cut through even the toughest grass. Currently on sale for about $65 less than the MSRP, at around $165, this fantastic lawn mower offers a lot of features at an affordable price – and is a great value for your money.

The one feature that we haven’t discussed yet that the GreenWorks has but none of the other power mowers on the list is the fact that it complies with California Proposition 65. The only “greener” mower on our list is Fiskars manual mower, but that wouldn’t be a fair comparison. This GreenWorks lawn mower has ZERO carbon emissions and meets the stringent regulations in terms of the chemicals used to manufacture them.
Construction and Design
Because we promised to hit each of the main types of lawn mowers, the GreenWorks 25022 Lawn Mower is our pick for corded electric mower. There is no battery to keep charged or need for gas and oil with this machine, all you need is a place to plug it in – and a REALLY long extension cord. That’s right, this lawn mower doesn’t come with a cord so you need to buy one yourself. According to the owner’s manual, you need to get one with at least a 12 Amp rating. If you go with anything less, you are definitely going to have problems and are likely to end up destroying your mower. The longer the cord you get, the higher the gauge you will need. If you are not sure, check the manual and ask a professional.

The other difference between the GreenWorks 20-Inch Corded Lawn Mower and the other two electric mowers on our list is that it isn’t self propelled, but the powerful 12 Amp Electric Motor is strong enough to cut through the toughest grass. Like all of the quality power mowers we recommend, there are three options for grass clippings – side ejection, rear collection bag and mulching.

Because this electric motor doesn’t have the added weight of the battery, it is lighter than the cordless mowers – weighing only 56 pounds. The 20-inch wide cutting deck is made of durable steel.
Performance and Ease of Use
Because the distance that you can cover depends upon the length of the cord you get, this mower is best for small to medium size yards – unless you have electric sources all over the place. While this does place a limitation on what you can do compared to a cordless electric mower, a benefit it has is the fact that you don’t need to worry about charging the battery – or waiting a few hours if you let the charge run out. As long as there is electricity, you are good to go.

Once the GreenWorks 12 Amp Corded 20-Inch Mower is plugged in, it starts with a simple push of a button. When you are done using it, the handle conveniently folds down for compact storage. It can also be stored on it’s side since there is no need to worry about gas spilling out.

Pushing this mower takes a bit more work than a self-propelled lawn mower, but it is less expensive – so if pushing a mower is not a problem for you, this is a good trade off. This GreenWorks Lawn Mower does have wider front heels (10”) and smaller front ones (7”) to make it easier to push and maneuver over terrain that is uneven and around flower beds and trees.

At the time of our review, the GreenWorks 12 Amp Corded Electric mower had an overall Amazon rating of 4.3 stars – 64% of owners loved it enough to give it 5 stars, and another 20% gave it 4.
At the $250 price range, Husqvarna’s 3-in-1 Push Lawn Mower has 140cc Briggs & Stratton gas engine and designed to easily maneuver through tight spaces. Husqvarna also makes some great all wheel drive lawn mowers if you have really difficult terrain to mow!
Husqvarna Gas Powered 3-in-1 Push Lawn Mower with High Rear Wheels - 140cc Briggs & Stratton Engine

Husqvarna 5521P Push Mower - 21-Inch

At a price of about 250 dollars on Amazon at the moment of this writing, the Husqvarna 5521P 3-in-1 Push Mower is one of the best on the market today. You definitely get good value for your hard earned money. Here are several interesting features of this lawn mower:
  • 3 in 1 cutting options – side ejection, rear collection bag and mulching
  • 4 point height adjustment, with 5 different options (1.25” to 3.42”)
  • Powerful Briggs and Stratton 5-1/2-torque - 140-cc engine
  • 21” wide cutting path but still maneuverable in tight spaces
  • 12” high rear wheels make pushing this mower easier
  • Handle folds down for convenient storage
At the time we conducted our research, out of the 334 Amazon reviews for the Husqvarna Gas Powered Push Lawn Mower, 53% of owners gave it 5 stars and another 20% gave it 4. Among the critical reviews, there are reports of product defects but since both Husqvarna and Briggs & Stratton are well-known brands with great reputations, these are likely to be isolated incidents.
Construction and Design
Husqvarna and Briggs & Stratton – two names that are known for quality and durability and you get both with the Husqvarna Gas Powered 3-in-1 Push Lawn Mower.

This mower features a 140cc Briggs - 5-1/2-torque & Stratton gas engine that is both easy to start and highly dependable. While this is a push mower that depends upon your personal force to get it going, the powerful 4 cycle engine does a great job of cutting all types of grass. The Husqvarna 5521P Push Mower has 8 inch front wheels and 12 inch rear wheels – this design helps to make the mower easier to push.

Despite the fact that Husqvarna 3-in-1 Push Lawn Mower has an extra wide cutting path of 21”, it has a compact design that makes maneuvering tight spaces a breeze – not to mention the fact that when you are done, the handle folds down for easy storage.

You get three options for dealing with grass clippings – side ejection, real collection or mulching. The cutting height has 5 adjustable options from 1.25 inches to 3.42 inches. You can also adjust height independently at each wheel, so this gives you even more variations.
Performance and Ease of Use
While some people prefer the “simple” maintenance of an electric mower, there are others who prefer to rely on gas. One of the benefits is that you can get more done in one time period. If the gas runs out and you have more to do, just add more. Even if you have run a gas powered lawn mower before, it is wise to make sure you read the owner’s manual to makes sure that you not only add the right stuff, but so you know what kinds of maintenance the machine requires to keep it in tip-top running condition.

This lawn mower is powerful to handle all kinds of vegetation and the different terrains that are common to most yards – but don’t let the big rear tires trick you in to thinking that it’s an all terrain lawn mower, it’s not going to handle every terrain like a commercial mower would. What the high real wheels do offer, plus the fact that it only weighs 60 pounds, is a push mower that is actually easier to push than most. There have been some owners who expressed a concern about how the Husqvarna Gas Powered Mower handles wet or really thick grass – but this is due to the amount of force that is needed (which is true of all push mowers) not the power of the engine. Trust us, it’s mighty powerful.

The three different options for grass clippings and the adjustable heights make it possible to create a well-manicured yard.
This is a high quality lawn mower that has been discontinued by WORX. It is loaded with great features and is still available on Amazon for about $300 less than MSRP. You may want to pick up a few replacement blades while you are at it.
WORX Cordless PaceSetter Self Propelled 3-In-1 Lawn Mower with Removable Battery & IntelliCut

WORX WG789 Lawn Mower - 19-Inch / 36 Volt

The Worx WG789 PaceSetter is a self-propelled cordless electric lawn mower that features a wide 19-inch cutting path. Even though this is the most expensive machine on our short list, it offers incredible value for the money – especially the current price tag of around $459, it is almost $200 less than the original price.

Let’s take a look at what you get:
  • Cordless electric mower with rechargeable and removable 36V battery
  • Self-Propelled technology that adjust the mower speed to your pace
  • IntelliCut technology which will adjust the torque depending upon conditions
  • 19” cutting width with 6 mowing heights (range of 1.5 to 3.5 inches)
  • 3 options for dealing with grass clippings – side eject, rear collection or mulching
  • Collection bag is large enough to hold 1.6 bushels of clippings
  • Indicator light to tell you the charge level
  • Handle folds down for compact storage
All this and it looks really sharp too!

At the time we did our research, 54% of owners gave the WORX PaceSetter Cordless Electric Mower a rating of 5 stars on Amazon. Out of the critical reviews, there are a lot of people who reported a learning curve with regards to the self propelling technology. When first using it, there is a tendency to pick up the walking pace a bit too quickly, making the machine have to “catch up” – which means you are pushing harder. The best advice is to pick you your pace a bit more gradually. Overall, this mower performs really well, so we see no reason why you shouldn’t take it into account.
Construction and Design
While WORX Pacesetter lawn mower is no longer being made by the manufacturer, it has so many great features that it’s actually the model that we consider one of the best out there – especially since you can get it at a reduced price on Amazon.

Let’s start with the power source. The WORX WA0022 is a cordless electric battery that uses a 36 Volt battery. Because there is not cord, you get the flexibility of a gas lawn mower without all the maintenance – plus it will start on the first try without pulling a cord. A fully charged battery will hold its charge for about an hour, which is long enough for the average person to mow about 12,500 feet (about the size of 6 tennis courts) if you are in power mode.

The battery takes 16 hours to reach a full charge, and this can be done while it is on the machine, or on a separate charger. For people with larger yards, who want to do more in one time period, because the battery is removable, you can purchase a second battery so you always have one ready to go.

The Worx PaceSetter is has a 19” wide cutting path and features a self-propel function that will automatically adjust to your pace. A feature that is unique to this model is the propulsion engage handle that monitors the amount of force you use to determine the mower’s speed. This means that the faster you walk, placing force on the handle as you push the mower, the more rapidly the drive system in the mower will accelerate – meaning you aren’t “pushing harder to go faster” like you would with regular push mower. The maximum speed is 3.6 miles per hour – so no jogging with it.

The WORX PaceSetter is 3-In-1 Lawn Mower which means it gives you multiple options for how you can handle the cut grass – you can eject it to the side, collect it in a rear bag or mulch it right back in to the ground.
Performance and Ease of Use
The WORX PaceSetter is a lawn mower that takes the “chore” out of yard work. It is easy to operate, powerful and can handle all types of vegetation. It uses with patented IntelliCut technology to make sure that the machine has the power it needs based upon the conditions – meaning it won’t bog down when you are cutting tall grass or mulching the leaves. WORX’s Intellicut system will increase or decrease the torque of the motor depending what is being cut. There are 6 different height options for how short or tall you want to cut your grass.

There are two settings on the Worx PaceSetter Self-Propelled Mower – Power for the tough stuff and Quiet for the easy (or when you don’t want wake up the neighbors in the morning or when you are mowing by the open windows). By the way, if you are using the quiet mode, while it won’t have as much power, it means that the battery will hold it’s charge longer, allowing you to get more done.

The Worx WG788 uses with patented IntelliCut technology to make sure that the machine has the power it needs based upon the conditions – meaning it won’t bog down when you are cutting tall grass or mulching the leaves. There are two settings – Power for the tough stuff and Quiet for the easy (or when you don’t want wake up the neighbors in the morning or when you are mowing by the open windows). By the way, if you are using the quiet mode, while it won’t have as much power it means that the battery will hold its charge longer, letting you get more done.

Overall, this is one incredible easy to use lawn mower – with the exception of the fact that the 36 volt lead-acid battery is a bit heavy weighing about 90 pounds (the entire mower weighs 106 pounds). The size is needed to power the machine, which is what makes it so efficient, but if you are someone who chose the machine because of physical challenges, you might want to get someone to lift it. Fortunately, the battery can be charged while it is on the machine, so it really only needs to be taken out if you are running a back up on a charger.
The advanced design of the StaySharp™ Reel Mower by Fiskar makes it 30% easier to push than standard manual mowers. Fiskar also makes the StaySharp™ Max Reel Mower, which offers more power and is even easier to push!
Fiskars StaySharp™ Reel Mower 17 Inch Push Lawn Mower - Manual Mower

Fiskars StaySharp™ 362080-1001 (6208)

Fiskars StaySharp™ features an InertiaDrive™ Reel which offers 50% more cutting power than standard manual reel mowers. Even when on sale at Amazon for around 170 dollars, this is definitely not what you would call a cheap lawn mowing option. Other manual mowers can be found for half the price and you can actually get a decent power mower for the same price (or even a bit less).

But if you want a REALLY good, high quality manual reel mower, then the StaySharp™ Reel Mower by Fiskars is the one to get. There are no “bells and whistles” – you just push it and go. The 17” cutting path and relatively light weight (compared to power mowers) makes maneuvering tight spots easy. Oh, by the way – you can adjust the cutting height too (from 1.5 - to 3.5-inches).

You can take this baby with you anywhere without having to worry about a power source – and you will doing wonders for the environment. Want to multi-task? Get a work out while doing yard work with this powerful reel mower.

If you want some additional features, you may want to check out Fiskars’ two other models – the StaySharp™ Plus Reel Mower and the StaySharp™ Max Reel Mower.
Construction and Design
Before we get started with our review of the StaySharp Reel Mower by Fiskars, we need to make sure that we make on thing clear – this is a manual mower. That means that the only power source is you (unless of course you have a teenager around the house that needs something to do). You might be wondering why we put one of these on our list of best mowers – especially since there are power motors for the same price, or less. It’s because the purpose of this review is to give you a glimpse at some of the best of all the different types of lawn mowers – this one definitely fits the bill in the manual mower arena. What, you ask makes this different from the old fashioned reel motor your grandfather had (or still has) in his garage?

The StaySharp Reel Mower has uses advance technology that it calls a InertiaDrive™ Reel which efficiently converts muscle energy to motion – meaning that it takes less work to push and go to work. This manual lawn mower has enough “power” to cut through touch spots, super thick grass, weeds and twigs – things that would jam up and completely stop traditional reel mowers.

The other thing that makes this mower stand out from other ones in its class is the StaySharp Cutting System. With other manual mowers you need to sharpen them at least once a year, but not with Fiskars’ StaySharp Reel Mower. The precision-ground hardened steel blades are engineered in a way so that they cut the grass without the blades touching each other. This reduces friction and blade wear, making them stay sharp longer.
Performance and Ease of Use
In assessing the performance and easy of use of the StaySharp™ 17” Inch Push Lawn Mower, most of our comparison will be against other manual mowers – because needless to say, in terms of the amount of work you are going to put into mowing your yard, compared to a gas or electric mower, this one is going to “fall short.” But that’s not because it’s not doing its job, it’s because we are talking about a totally different ball game – kind of like comparing apples to oranges.

The StaySharp™ is for people who WANT to have lawn mower without having to rely on battery charging, electrical cords, gasoline, oil, or loud engine noise. If that’s you – then you are going to love how this compares to other manual mowers.
  • The advanced technologies of the StaySharp™ Reel Mower reduces the amount of force needed to push it by 30%.
  • The thick steel blades of the InertiaDrive Reel give you 50% more cutting power.
  • The StaySharp Cutting System keeps your blades sharper, longer - reducing the frequency of sharpening.
The blades on this Fiskar manual mower are sharp enough to cut all grass types, even the super tough southern varieties such as Bermuda, Bahia, St. Augustine and Zoysia.

You may find this funny, but out of all the lawn mowers on our short list, the StaySharp™ Reel Mower has the highest overall rating on Amazon of 4.3 stars out of 5 (the Greenworks mower has the same), with 66% of owners giving it 5 stars. It also has the lowest number of 1 star reviews – only 2%. Not too shabby for a mower that you REALLY have to push.

What we learn from the critical reviews is that this manual mower doesn’t work as well on bumpy yards. If that’s your yard, you would do better with the StaySharp™ Max Reel Mower (which Received Popular Mechanics 2010 Green Design Award and has been recommended by Consumer Reports over other reel mowers).
