What is the Best Smartphone?

Choosing the right smartphone for your needs can be a daunting experience, especially considering that there are numerous models in the market today. Let’s take a look at our recommended picks and see how they compare in terms of performance, construction, features – and of course, price.
Our Top Choice
The Samsung Galaxy S7 is a premium smartphone with a 5.5-inch Quad Super Amoled dual-edge display and 12MP camera. If your budget is tighter, you can get one of the earlier models in the Galaxy series, and still be assured of great quality.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge – 32GB Memory. Dual Pixel 12.0 MP Camera. Several Color Choices.

The biggest challenge that the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge faces is the fact that it must follow up on the some of the most innovative handsets from the Samsung Company. The Galaxy S6 was proof that Samsung can produce prestigious and innovative devices for the mass market. So how did the company follow up on their innovation? Having paid attention to clientele, Samsung seems to have responded positively by addressing all concerns and have made everything much better. Here are several impressive features of this phone:
  • Crisp, bright display on 5.5” Quad HD Super AMOLED screen with dynamic, contoured dual edge display.
  • Water and dust resistant phone that repels splashes and dunks.
  • Sharper low-light images with the world’s first dual-pixel Smartphone camera
The S7 Edge features the latest version of software known as the Android 6.0 MarshMallow and has its own TouchWiz interface. The processor has great power making the phone faster. The changes on the design of the the S7 Edge are brilliant as well and the battery is much more powerful and overall, this is a remarkable phone.

Perhaps one of the strongest features in the Galaxy series is the attention that Samsung puts in to the camera, which manifests itself perfectly in the Galaxy S7 Edge’s 12 megapixel incandescent camera. This digital camera smartphone makes a huge improvement on the S6 Edge in low light pictures and sharp detail, and does not overexpose areas that are reasonably light. Samsung still leads in Smartphone imaging and the S7 has stretched out this advantage even further. For those that are looking forward to imaging, the S7 Edge is the device for that.
Construction and Design
Despite tough competition in the market, Samsung is without a doubt still the best Android phone maker, and with very good reasons. The Galaxy series begun with the Galaxy S in 2010 and was followed up by the Galaxy S2, the S3 and then the S4. With every release of these solid high-end smart phones, there have been additional features and a tweak in construction and design. The Galaxy S6 and S7 Edge are wonderful phones, but the S7 Edge seems to take the world by storm. The biggest impact with the Galaxy S7 Edge is found in its design. It has departed from the S6 Edge, taking a gentler curve on its back that gives it a great feel on the hand. The phone is easier to pick up and when handled with a normal grip, the grip is quite secure. The curved screen is 5.5 inches and opens up to the TouchWiz interface. Because of the Super AMOLED technology, the screen is bright and vibrant.

The MicroSD support that was missing in the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge makes a return in S7 Edge. Better yet, the S7 Edge continues with the tradition of Samsung’s smart use of IP68 waterproofing and dustproofing, making it idea even in harsh weather conditions. There is no doubt that Galaxy S7 Edge has proved that Samsung is great at producing innovative technology and can make adaptations for its clients. Without a doubt, the S7 Edge is practical, powerful and a remarkable device.
Performance and Ease of Use
The Galaxy Edge 7 has an excellent expandable storage and refined extra navigation software. These are features that make it quite easy to use and markedly enhance its performance as compared to its predecessors. Its secondary menu is very useful with bigger icons and shortcuts to apps and tasks that you prefer to use often. It has a speed dial and is a phone that you will definitely use for two or more years without having to make another upgrade.

Wireless charging is also available with the S7 Edge, and the battery has increased to 3600 mAh meaning that you will have no trouble making it through the day, even with continued use.

With the G5 4G Smartphone by LG, you will enjoy a transformative design that features slide out removable battery and 32 GB of storage. The LG series also features an affordable smartphone- the LG G4- which features a larger screen and higher battery capacity.

LG G5 4G LTE Smartphone - 5.3" 4GB RAM, 32GB SSD Dual Sim Snapdragon 820 Quad-Core

The LG G5 works very well for all the things that you really need to get done. These include taking photos, browsing the internet, and watching videos throughout the day. It is a top tier handset that has super speed performance, operating lightning fast and smoothly. With its water resistant body, you definitely have the additional peace of the mind. Let's take a look at the incredible features of the LG G5:
  • Slide-out removable battery
  • Dual rear cameras
  • 32 GB internal storage
  • Fingerprint scanner for better security
  • 4 GM RAM
Construction and Design
Year after year, LG Electronics has made changes and improvements to its line of smartphones – and with this latest model, the LG G5, they have made no attempt to “be like everyone else.” Most LG phones generally play it safe but the G5 is all risk. The LG G3 started with a QHD panel and laser auto focus. The LG G4 was not as revolutionary as the G3, but had substantial upgrades with major improvements. The LG G5 has done a lot more and is an entirely new device that moves away from the design aspects of LG’s past two flagships and remarkably enhances the LG Smartphone brand. It’s the first smart phone to go modular (making it possible to sap out and customize some hardware parts) and has a few add-ons that other models don’t have. The camera is wonderful, the battery life excellent, and the screen is splendid.

The design is very clean and has a single volume clicker and SIM tray on either side. LG dumped the volume keys on the rear and the lock switch is in a somewhat unconventional position below the camera sensor. It would have been preferable to have all the buttons in one place because now it forces one to move their hands around the phone’s sides to reach everything. It is a great looking phone nonetheless, although the design is generally unassuming. The phone is nothing showy or fancy but the design has been put together very well and everything is marvelously proportioned making it feel great on the hand. The weight of the phone, the smooth edges and its thickness are all perfectly on point.
  • Size: 149.4 x 73.9 x 7.7mm
  • Weight: 159g
  • Display: 5.3-inch Quad HD IPS Quantum Display (2560 x 1440 / 554ppi)
  • Battery: 2,800mAh (removable)
The G series smartphones started with the Optimus G is 2012 and then the G2 was released a year later as a rebranding of the LG flagship with designs that are somewhat identical. The design featured a giant display that had small bezels, buttons that are mounted on the phone’s rear. The G3 was released in 2014 and the Quad HD display was an additional feature while the software and the laser autofocus were revamped. Enter the G4 and you can see how the G series continued to evolve. The button layout that has become a mainstay of LG devices is maintained. The G5 has brought improved processing and battery management and is well balanced as far as speed and endurance is concerned. In comparison, the LG G5 has a metal body, while the G4 has a plastic one.

The G5 also has fingerprint touch. It has a fresh design and is more powerful. The G5 is thicker and weightier than the G4. The LG G5 is also definitely whole lot more biometrically equipped than the LG G4. In all its flagship phones, LG continued with the 5.5-inch quad-HD display. This has changed with the G5 which has a marginally smaller display that’s 5.3 inches although the number of pixels remains the same. The brightness of the screen has also been improved for the G
Performance and Ease of Use
The LG G5 is a super fast phone and your everyday functionalities such as browsing, opening apps are made smooth and completely without lag. Most times the device is remarkable in its performance, with games running and other running programs operating smoothly. You will generally not experience shuttering when streaming 1440p video on YouTube. The audio quality is adequately sufficient and can get to quite loud volumes, making it perfect for music enthusiasts. The phone does support 24-bit audio meaning that tune sounds will have great sound when you use a pair of headphones. The phone has exceptional call quality and superb clarity.

The 16-megapixel rear camera with secondary, wide-angle sensor; 8-megapixel front camera is exceptional and follows the tradition of LG because they are wizards at producing Smartphone cameras. The battery life is great and will easily last the day with continued use. It is also worthy to note that this cellphone powers up quite swiftly.
The iPhone 6s comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera to help you take outstanding photos, and 2 GB RAM to ensure your operations are seamless. For people on a tighter budget, you can save money by looking at one of Apple’s older model iPhones.

Apple iPhone 6s - 16, 64 or 128 GB Memory. Two Sizes. Silver, Gold, Rose Gold or Gray

This iPhone 6 smartphone is one of the better balanced in the iPhone category. The phone operates with great flow at just about any task, and while the frame is same as its predecessor, the new touchscreen is simply resplendent. There are other phones available in this signet but the biggest advantage the iPhone 6s has is that it has a new level of strength and a glass that will not shatter easily. It is also lightweight despite a few added grams and it can be manipulated easily.

The 6s Apple camera has received an upgrade and this is very significant because the last upgrade was done when the iPhone 4s was released in 2011. The new 12MP iSight rear-facing camera can shoot 4k video and this is really a necessity rather than advancement, especially in these recent times. The iSight sensor’s has 50 per cent more pixels. This has contributed to a faster and more accurate autofocus. There is also less accidental blur and noise. The front facing camera has also received an upgrade from 1.2MP to 5MP meaning that people who like to take selfies will be benefited.

The 6s Apple’s new camera has greater depth of field, is full and more accurate in color. These animated backgrounds are simply amazing. Anytime you open the camera, Live Photo mode automatically turns on and you will see a small yellow box appear on the screen as you take pictures. If you want to have a look at the Live Photos, simply press the screen down and there will be a momentary blur as an indicator that playback has started and this can be a bit infuriating.
Construction and Design
There is no doubt that Apple has some of the best designed phones in the industry. Over the years, Apple’s team of designers have refined their designs and turned the iPhone into one of the most polished aluminum and glass technological beasts. That is why the iPhone 6s has its predecessor’s looks as well as some awesome new features that are much more than just additional upgrades.

The iPhone 6s has a beautiful body design, with volume buttons and on and off switch positioning that is very identical to the previous edition. The camera lens still protrudes and the headphone jack is still located on the left of the phone’s underside like the iPhone 6. The display is still identical to the previous edition and the size remains at 4.7 inches diagonally (or you an go for the 6s Plus at 5.5 inches).

There are ingenious changes that have been made to the iPhone 6s, specifically the use of new materials. A new 7000 series aluminum has been used to construct the phone. This is a type of alloy that is used in the aerospace industry that Apple says has 60% more strength because the company was interested in having a more durable and resistant body.

The phone has been increased in weight from 129g to 143g although this iPhone still has the slim and lightweight feeling to it. Apart from the gold, grey and silver tones, an additional rose gold tone has been introduced. The display of the 6s’ has been fortified thus making this phone one of the most durable Smartphones available in the market because of the process known as dual ion-exchange during manufacturing. What this means is that the phone is more likely to survive the odd drop. The resolutions of the display remain the same at 1334 x 750 and the pixels have not changed either at 326 pixels-per-inch. Text remains rich and sharp, color reproduction is precise, and contrast ratio is first rate.
Performance and Ease of Use
As far as usability is concerned, the 3D has three distinct functions, namely Quick Actions and Peep and Pop, hence the name 3D. With the Peek and Pop feature, you can quickly check a link, an address on Maps, or a photo without going through the home button. You can then input whatsoever you desire. It has great camera a much faster processor and a RAM of 4GB, meaning that you can execute your apps without any worry of hanging.

The 3D Touch is a profound. This is a new enhanced rendition of the Force Touch technology. The pressure sensitive technology senses the depth of pressure that you apply to the cover glass and thus prompting a reaction and provides feedback from the Taptic engine that is a new installation. A light press will cause a mini vibration and more pressure will bring about a greater buzz.
The HTC 10 offers a large 5.2-inch display screen, 12 megapixel camera an incredible 4GB of Ram for efficiency in operation. This is the newest and brightest smartphone in the HTC lineup, but if you are looking to save some money, older models might not have as many features, but are still great phones.

HTC 10 Android Smartphone – Gorilla Glass 5.2” Display, 4GB RAM. 32 or 64GB SSD. Black, Silver or Gold.

The HTC 10 is a premium Smartphone that is definitely worth its price tag. It has fast battery charging and its battery is a non-removable Lion 3000 mAh battery. Two more of its best features are its speedy fingerprint security and a camera that is capable of taking some of the best photos.

The resolution has undergone a major upgrade with more pixel density at 2560 x 1440 quad-HD resolution that covers 99.9% of the sRGB color range. The LCD is not as vibrant as compared to other phones but it’s not way off and you will hardly notice this. The display is quite engaging with colors that are quite vivid but are not over exaggerated. They are quite precise as well and this makes the editing of pictures very accurate. Because the color range is comprehensive, watching videos becomes quite a pleasure.

The HTC 10 is without a doubt one of the best media friendly phones. The phone has great viewing angles with little or no reflections at all and it definitely has improved brightness. This is a phone that is great as far as usability is concerned both for the indoors and the outdoors.
Construction and Design
The HTC 10 is without a doubt one of the best phones that HTC has ever come up with. It features a slim, ergonomic design and has many impressive software features to give the user a matchless android experience. This is HTC's latest flagship phone and it’s brilliant. It deviates from the design of its predecessors but still has some recognizable features. The front looks like it has been peeled off the One A9 and the back is a like an enhanced version of the rear casing from the One M9. The first time you look at it, you would be forgiven for thinking it is an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S7. It is actually an ideal amalgamation of style and substance.

The phone has a metal casing with a back that feels great to touch and a stylish contour that gives it a comfortable feeling on your hand. The camera sensor is placed centrally and you have the LED flash along it with sufficient space for the laser autofocus system. Its lustrous design is divided by two bands of antenna lines flowing seamlessly around the top and bottom that feel like part of the design. The sleep and wake button is easy to identify even when you are pocketing the phone because it is beveled. The HTC 10 still has a tray on each side for the Nano SIM tray and a micro SD card as compared to most phones that have changed that to a single tray. If this were combined, it would make things more aesthetically pleasing, although this has no effect on performance.

When you look at the front, you realize that the HTC 10 is quite minimalist and this makes it one of the cleanest looking phones around. Even the brand logo has been removed. Some major differences can be noted from the One M9 like the capacitive home key that’s found beneath the display that’s more of a touchpad than a button. There’s also the fingerprint scanner similar to what you will find on any high end Android phone. There is a change to capacitive Back and Recent Apps Keys in contrast to the on screen rendition found on either side of the home button.

As far as size is concerned, the HTC 10 is almost similar to the Galaxy S7 although it is slightly taller and conspicuously heavier but this gives it a solidly comfortable feel. You will find the headphone jack, camera sensor and USB-C port on the bottom of this impressive and glamorous looking phone that is without a doubt a delight to use. With the HTC 10, everything has been modernized and the screen is no exception. The display is 5.2 inches which is slightly bigger than other versions.
Performance and Ease of Use
HTC has done a brilliant job with the HTC 10 and its features are absolutely useful. What’s notable about the device is that it is clean and simple with all the useless and duplicate Apps being left out. It is common for most android phones to have apps that duplicate functions and the HTC 10 has ensured that this is not the case. The software experience with this smartphone is smoother and there is more integration.

There are a lot more audio centric features and listening to audios or videos has been improved drastically. There’s massive improvement when you listen with headphones. This phone is generally very fast and it with software optimization, it can become faster.

Gaming and everyday use thorough multitasking can be achieved with ultimate ease. This is without a doubt one of the smoothest running Android phones with prompt execution of actions done in minimal time. The HTC also has very impressive call quality, rock solid connectivity and great transfer speeds.
Motorola has changed the world of smartphones with the ShatterShield technology of the Droid Turbo 2 – making the display almost impossible to break. It features an Amoled capacitive touchscreen and a cool 16 million colors to give you a better experience. We can also recommend older versions of the Droid, like the Mini and the Maxx, for lower costs.

Motorola Droid Turbo 2 - 5.4” Display w/ ShatterShield Technology, Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB RAM. 32GB/64GB SSD. 4 Colors.

As far as the features are concerned, the Droid Turbo 2 does great and it is as good as any flagship device. The phone has an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM that gives it amazing speed. You will notice that it operates very smoothly, as smooth as most high end smart phones. As a matter of fact, the Snapdragon 810 is a new processor as compared to the 808 that is found in the G4, Moto X Style Pure Edition, and LG V10.

Turbo 2 also has a 5.4-inch P-OLED Quad HD display that parallels to a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. The QD is great and has a very energetic display and the colors are more than sufficient, while the viewing angles are quite outstanding.
Construction and Design
Is there any other phone that is more associated with the Android operating system than the Droid line by Motorola? We think not. And the latest addition to the family, the Turbo 2 has certainly gotten a lot attention. From the moment the information was announced that Motorola had developed a new ShatterShield technology that has a two year surefire guarantee that your screen will not crack, people started REALLY putting it to the test – going as far as to drop it from several stories high! This is the first phone to have an 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixel) display and what’s even better is that it under normal use, it is virtually indestructible. It did fail a few of the “youtube” tests, but hey, what can you expect when a phone is dropped while skydiving or a hammer is taken directly to it?

The Motorola Droid Turbo 2 a derivation of the Motorola Moto X Pure Edition and the Moto X play, with a few additions being made both internally and externally. Most Motorola phones are great because of their imaginative build, their quality and their handiwork. This is not so with the Droid Turbo and while it has a solid makeup, it certainly does not have the flagship appearance or an ostentatious design – something that some users have complained about, but it certainly doesn’t affect the performance. It is somewhat similar in appearance to the Droid Maxx although there are some very distinctive differences such as the metal frame.
Performance and Ease of Use
While it may not look as pretty as other smartphones, the Turbo 2 also comes out tops in other areas. The phone has a Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of base storage. It has a very smooth and fast function, running on the Android Lollipop operating system. The Kindle app is a great addition and the phone’s battery is definitely a standout feature. The battery can go on for 48 hours on a single charge and even during heavy use, the battery could go down to 10% in around 14 hours. The Turbo 2 will definitely make it through a day of very heavy use and this is a major highlight.

The 21 MP camera is another standout feature of the Turbo 2. This phone is able to take some very wonderful shots despite bright light during the day and its HDD pictures turn out with great detail without appearing to be too unnatural. Its camera works much better than most Android phones. While the Turbo 2 is rather thick at 9.2mm its battery is one of the largest and this is a compromise that is acceptable because the battery’s extended life is a great benefit.

How Do I Choose the Best Smartphone?

When choosing a smart phone, one important thing to consider is the reputation, quality and reliability of the manufacturer that makes it. Just as mentioned above, there are many smartphone models in the market today, but only a few brands have managed to solidify their name with high end mobile phones. For the purpose of this review, we have chosen 5 top brands and will feature one model from each of them, looking at one of their latest or recent flagships (in the near future, we will have separate reviews for each of these brands, so you can see the range of cell phones they offer).

Essentially, we will look at the best smartphones from 5 leading brands – Samsung, LG Electronics, Apple, HTC and Motorola. From our picks you will notice that we haven’t reviewed one of the latest smartphones - the Google Nexus 6P by Huwawei - but this doesn’t mean that it’s not a great phone, we simply didn’t have room for 6!. The Nexus does offer impeccable features, and amazing ratings on the internet. It is worth every penny as well.

Most smartphone brands choose to release a number of models within the same line, with the difference being notable in the color, storage capacity or display size. A good example is the iPhone 6, a smartphone that’s available in different colors (black, silver, grey and gold) and storage capacity (16GB and 64GB and 128GB). This is the same case with smartphones in the same series. For instance, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus differ in terms of display size (4.7 inches and 5.5 inches respectively) and other features. Our goal is to give you the information about the line, and what options are available within it – letting you decide what ones are right for you.

By the way, if you’re looking for perfect headphones to pair with your smartphone, you can check out our review on top 5 Bluetooth wireless headphones. If you prefer to go with earbuds, we also have a review for the top 5 in-ear headphones that have proven to live to their promises in terms of sound quality.

Let’s now take a look at some of the consideration factors to keep in mind when shopping for a smartphone.
When you want to upgrade your smartphone or simply purchase a new one, one thing that probably comes to your mind is the price factor. Of course different models come with different price tags. With a quick search you will see some smartphones going for as little as $50, while others costing as much as $1000 dollars. One of the main determining factors is usually the brand- top brands such as Apple, Samsung and HTC will tend to set a higher price tag since they have already won a good share of the market and have a loyal following (and have great features and benefits to back up the price tag).

Other factors that come into play when deciding the price include:
  • Display Size
  • Storage (extendable or not)
  • Processor and RAM
  • Camera
  • Battery Capacity
Since our picks comprise of the latest and greatest models by top brands, the price is understandably fair – ranging from about $479 to around $799. We did come across less inexpensive models by the same top brands, but for the purpose of this review, we wanted to provide you information about the ones they offer which incorporate cutting-edge technology and enhanced features. We do want to note that for each one, we also provide the name of a lower end model that we recommend – just in case your budget is a bit tighter.
The features section of each smartphone is probably the most important part and you should really pay attention to it if you want to make a great decision. Apart from the classic smartphone features like processor, camera, memory and so on, there are many other aspects you need to take into account such as the following ones:
  • Operating System - Just like the PC, a smartphone operates using an operating system. Windows OS happens to be the winner in PCs since it comes with many supporting applications and is user friendly. When it comes to cell phones, Android takes the bigger share, followed by iOS. Other operating systems in the market include Microsoft Windows, webOS, Blackberry and Symbian.
  • Storage Space - Most smartphone manufacturers these days are making models with 16 GB storage capacity, which is enough to store your pictures, videos and songs. To make it even better, some offer an extendable memory so that you can have a more storage capacity. However, if you wish to get more in-built storage, you can opt for other options such as 32 GB and 64 GB smartphones.
  • Camera Quality - These days, people love to record memories using their phones. It is amazing seeing the developments that have been witnessed in mobile camera technology. While most decent smartphones will come with at least a 5MP camera, you will find some with better quality cameras of up to 13MP. So, depending on your use for the camera, you can either go with a 5MP, 8MP, 13MP or 16MP rear camera. This is also true for the front camera (commonly known as the selfie camera)
Construction and Design
The visual construction and design is definitely a major determining factor when it comes to purchasing a good smartphone. In reality, you will find that most brands choose to make a number of smartphones in the same line or series, with the differences being notable on the color, screen size and storage space. Here are factors in the construction and design to consider:
  • Screen Size- Visual experience is very important. The screen size is a major feature to consider as you begin your shopping process. You will find that some models- even the really cheap smartphones- that have a perfect screen or larger size tend to overshadow the model’s defects. Some of the common screen sizes you can get with latest releases include 4 inches, 4.2 inches, 4.5 inches, 4.7 inches, 5 inches, 5.5 inches, and 6 inches. Depending on your preference, you can choose to go with a smaller screen size or larger one.
  • Thickness and Weight- Many people do not want to walk around with a phone in their pocket that feels like a heavy stone. They want sleek and light phones that can be easy to carry. The concern of thickness is more aesthetic, so do not forget that a thinner smartphone does not necessarily mean the product is of better quality just because of size.
  • Color and Finish- Maybe you are not into black phones and prefer silver finish. Maybe you want an elegant look such as gold instead of simple grey. Even though it doesn’t impact the functionality, the color and style of a phone are important for many people. Apart from these finishes and colors, you can find some smartphones with a metallic finish or casing that’s made to improve the quality look.
  • Camera Options-Almost all smart phones today come with in-built cameras, either the rear facing camera or both a rear and front facing camera. If you are a selfie enthusiast, it is only good that you get a smartphone with the front camera, in addition to the back one. You also need to consider the camera quality (we will cover this in the features section).
Performance and Ease of Use
Needless to say, in today’s world people buy cell phones for more than just making calls. In order to execute your programs and apps seamlessly, you need a smartphone with better performance, good processing speed and enough storage for your personal demands. Whether you love browsing or playing games, you will want to go with a cell phone with some decent speed, and this mainly entails the processor and the RAM. The lowest you should settle for should be around 1GB of RAM, but you can find some smartphones with 4GB RAM or more. It depends with what you intend to use your smartphone for. In addition, you need to consider the amount of storage space. For those of you who like to have lots of games and apps, the last thing you want to have to do is delete one, to make room for another.

A good smartphone needs to be easy to use. It should be simple to access apps and execute any program you want. It should not prove difficult to establish connection to other devices. Most brands know this, and have gone an extra mile to simplify things just to make the experience seamless. A brand such as Apple offers more than 300,000 free and paid apps, while Android has more than 250,000. The more the number of apps you can access, the more options you will enjoy when installing the applications you need.

All smartphones are portable gadgets and utilize wireless technology for communication. However, some cell phones just offer 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, while others have more options such as 4G and LTE.
